Triple jaw surgery - Dec 4th
Hi all,
I’ve been lurking on the forum for a while but this is my first post! I’ve had braces twice in the past but finally decided to do the surgery (upper, lower and chin), making this the third time I’ve had braces. I’m 21 years old from Toronto and I’m having my surgery with Dr. Caminiti.
Some questions for you all:
1) I’ve currently scheduled to have 2 weeks off from work. I'm returning to work on Dec 21st giving me 16 days to heal up. Do you guys think that will be enough? I work in an office setting and pretty much sit at my desk all day.
2) Have any of you ever developed any TMJ problems after the surgery? One of the reasons that I am getting the surgery is that my jaw gets pretty tired / sore after trying to keep my mouth closed all day so I'm hoping that goes away after the surgery.
3) I’m having hooks placed on my braces soon – does that mean I’ll be banded shut?
4) After getting the results back from my EKG, it says possible septal infarction. Anybody ever had that and have any issues with their surgery because of it? I really don’t think that I could have had a heart attack in the past. I had epinephrine like 4 months ago because of an allergic reaction – could that register on the EKG? I’ll double check when I meet with the surgeon again –but just throwing this one out there.
Thanks in advance and I appreciate the responses!

In regards to:
#1. 16 days should be adequate.
#2. Orthognathic surgery can relieve TMJ dysfunction but expect it to take months for those joints and surrounding muscles to adapt.
#3. Yes. It's much better than being wired shut! Even with bands you should be able to open your mouth somewhat.
#4. EKG's can misdiagnose septal infarcts but if it was correct then some cells have died. Epinephrine would most likely show as tachycardia. It's also extremely short acting. It has a half-life of only two minutes! The whole life is dose dependent(and not double the half-life since the decay of drugs is exponential). Anyway, it's not likely to be causing issues so long after being used.

Thanks for the response! Surgeon confirmed that I will have elastics after the surgery. He said he'll look into the EKG with the anesthesiologist.
I went for molds and xrays yesterday with the surgeon.. Today I noticed that there is a 1 mm gap between my bottom front teeth, I don't think it was there yesterday. I had a gap closed off a few weeks ago and the elastic chain was removed from my braces to place the surgical hooks, so I think theres some movement going on.
Has anybody had this happen to them / will it affect my midlines post-surgery when the gap is closed off?
Thanks!

I'm doing okay.. trying to focus on finishing up most of my work before I leave for 2 weeks. A bit worried about my asthma (cough variant) as it has been acting up and hope that I won't be coughing too much after surgery, puffer will be hard to take.
I think I will be more nervous tonight and tomorrow
Hope your recovery is going well!

Hello Jdon,
I had lower, upper and chin on July 22nd of this year. I needed to take 5 weeks off due to a host of post-op complications. Almost 5 months post-op and still have slight swelling and numbness to chin. I think best advice is patience-but hardest to follow. As difficult and slow my recovery has been-I, without a doubt, would do it all again and see positive changes daily. Everyone's recovery is different and I'm wishing you the smoothest..Candycin ask your MD for an Ambien perscription. Sleep is definately needed for your recovery.

Thanks for the concern and well wishes especially candycin.
I was just discharged from the hospital today so that's why there was no updates. I had a blood vessel rupture under my tongue on the night before i was supposed to be discharged so I had to be extubated and was basically set back a week on recovery. Lots of bruising on my neck and face still but moving into pureed foods now is great!

jdon,
glad to hear you are doing okay
why did the vessel rupture? did everything else go okay?
are you still very swollen?
i just graduated to soft food on friday although i still have the original post op bands on since my lips are still very swollen and wont stretch without riping to change the bands...hope to get that done on the 21st
Soft foods are great but my gosh not being able to take the bands off is a huge hassle takes forever to "eat" anything
i am getting there slowly like i said before my dr said it will take me longer then the younger patients...being 35 LOL everytime he says that i want to kick him!!!!
how are you sleeping?

hi candycin, not sure why the vessel ruptured. Doc said it was fine when he patched me up. He said it could be it had been weakened and finally ruptured due to coughing or something
swelling right now is still pretty rough and my neck is like solid red lol
congrats on moving on to soft foods! i'm sure once the bands come off you'll be able to eat a lot more / faster
sleeping is not so great, i wake up a lot in the middle of the night and find it hard to sleep on an incline or on my back because i keep on choking on my saliva... have you experienced this? I think ill make a new thread for it

hi cancycin,
I found that taking a hot shower really helped clear up my sinuses. I'm also using HydraSense Gentle Nasal Spray and Rhinaris gel to moisturize my nose.
Glad to hear you are starting to look like you finally. I have two neices coming over later and hope they are not scared.
I don't have a splint in or any elastics. The elastics had to be removed while I was intubated but are being placed back in tomorrow (not looking forward to that)

my 6 year old daughter was scared of me for the first 4 days it was heartbreaking!!!
today my lips are starting to feel better but are still cut from being swollen and crammed into the brackets are my braces, i have started to use ortho wax and it does help a bit...i have been massaging my lips and trying to stretch them out but man do they ever hurt!!!
still swollen by my jaw line and a bit under my eyes but am finally starting to see what my profile is going to look like and boy what a change
not sure you if you read i didnt end up needing my jaw widenend in the back or the genio the surgeon did some grinding of 2 teeth and my jaw fits in the back and the 1 cm movement was enough to create a nice chin for me too!!!! so that saved me 2400$
people keep asking me if i regret doing it and so far i cant say yes or no
think i have to wait till i can talk better and not have the bands on to make that call!!!!
glad you are recovering well, it is such a frustrating process and is taking longer then i thought but getting there, i am glad i took 6 weeks off of work there is no way i could have been back at daycare tomorrow
is your face stil tingling like crazy?

I'm beginning to feel the irritation of the brackets against the swollen lips now too just got elastics put back in today and feeling a lot of pressure on the jaw.
glad to know that your profile is starting to shape up! everybody says I already look very different too.
My GP today asked me if it was worth it but I told her I will let her know in a year lol.
For the most part my lower lip and chin are tingling a lot still.
