Hey Buckey,

I've been catching up on your story and I hate cigarette smoke and it's lingering odor too - makes me gag and it IS bad for us to breath, even the residual stuff! I take it your ortho is a smoker. Does he actually blow smoke in your face while examining you or is it *merely* the after odor?! :yuck: Smoking is so bad for your teeth and general health, I can't believe an ortho would be a smoker

To anyone out there looking for an ortho, add this to your list of questions: do you smoke? will you smoke while examining me????

I completely understand how you feel about smoking! I'm lucky in the sense that I work on a smoke free campus at my job, but yes, my ortho is a smoker. The smell he has is that nasty, "I just came from a smoke break 10 minutes ago." smell. That was another thing that turned me off when I first went for my consultation, and my biggest consideration when I took two weeks to decide. My original plan which I will more than likely be sticking to once I get molar banded, is to continue my treatment at another location they just opened that's extremely close to my house and a few blocks from my job. I like new buildings . And yes, I totally agree that it is wrong to be an Orthodontist and smoke! That's like, being the leader of an AA group and a drinker at the same time. Not a good model to follow at all!

I work at a hospital/school, what's funny about it is my ortho got all of his credentials from the hospital I work at. Who'da thought!

This advice is golden ladies and gentlemen. Had I not known they were opening another location I would have NEVER began treatment with this Ortho. I also noticed my Ortho was very rushed and after thinking a while I knew he would not be working as close with me as the techs. Or else, once again I would NOT have begun treatment. I've had several phone conversations with my new ortho. The two weeks I gave myself to consider braces, I contacted my ortho's office and told the front desk how I felt about the Head Honcho and she let me know there would be another office opening in the near future. My number was given to him, he contacted me 3 days later (to me that's good timing for someone who's office hadn't been open quite yet). I wanted to wait until the office opened but it wouldn't be until the middle of October and my desire was to get treatment started before I began school on September 29th and there was only one way to do it.

Make sure all of your options are exhausted and get thoroughly informed if there is something you do not like or agree with.

Well...my teeth are crunching and clicking more than a couch potato eating chips with a remote permanently glue to the palm of his hand.

I kid you not! My lower second bicuspids just can't seem to stay still and not crunch these days. I thought another bracket had detached itself when I ran my tongue over my tooth on Tuesday. I was attempting to eat a sandwich when the incident began. I got up quickly and ran to the little girls room to check things out and noticed everything was still attached. I examined my mouth twice to be sure I hadn't missed anything. The only thing I did find was that I needed to brush really, really bad after I was finished eating . Not to mention when I ran my tongue over that tooth again it made the same exact noise it made when my first bracket and buccal tube popped off.

What the heck?

I was pretty upset when I noticed it was just my teeth shifting and I stopped eating (it was taking me a really long time) to check on things. I thought there was really something wrong! I got over it shortly afterward however and continued to eat.

Another weird thing. Does anyone notice the criss-cross ligs I have going on in my pics? I'm not able to see them at this very moment because company security is not permitting me to. If you can't see it I'll post another pic this evening, but then again I just may do it for grins . Anywho, I have absolutely no clue what the criss-cross deal is all about. I usually look at my new ligs after a wire change, this time I didn't. I didn't notice I had something interesting going on until I got home and checked out my new colored smile. And then the questions arose!

Yesterday I saw a fellow threader's new smile Petitcanard and she had the same thing! Its a mystery to me...does anyone happen to have any information regarding this wonder?

HeyBuckey, finally had time to catch up on your story! You're an entertaining writer

Glad your ortho is opening an new office and they seem to be more on the ball! Too bad it wasn't sooner so you could have started with them, but if you can switch that's fantastic! And I also find the smell of smoke awful, I can't believe your ortho smokes! Gross.

Let me know what you find out about the ligs, my next apptmt isn't until Jan 27 and I'm curious too!!

Thank you very much! Keeping up with the threads can be kind of daunting sometimes , so I definitely understand.

The new ortho surely is on the ball. I get my molar bands today, this afternoon I think I will call to get my consultation so they can know where to take me from this point. I really was trying to push being seen by that ortho first but he didn't have a location for one and the temporary location he was at scoping out the land was about 50 miles from me! If I didn't catch public transportation I probably would have obliged and met him sooner but I had no luck on that .

Stinky Ortho = NO FUN...

Did you check out the post from againbrace? He seems to know his stuff about criss-cross ligs!

I do appreciate you stopping by. I'll be sure to continue to check out your thread! I thought is was so cool how you just bit the bullet and got those braces even though you had some serious reservations. You are an inspiration to all Metal Mouthers!

Thanks for stopping by and thanks a bunch for the info! What's funny about it is not all of my ligs are criss-crossed. That was very useful and makes sense as to why not all of them look the same way! Thank you for your help!

Hello Everyone!

I have not posted at all! I've been really lazy lately. Finals are coming up and I have had a crap load of homework, no REAL time to do it and all I want to do is sit at my desk at work and stare at my computer screen until the next call comes in...I feel like such a bum.

Anywho!

Wow!!! againbrace! Third time around? Is that included in your combined time in your ticker or is that spread out over the years? Your smile is gonna knock the socks off of everyone when you're done. You know what they say...the third times a charm! Even though I'm sure you're tired of the braces, your gonna miss them dearly when they come off .

Ye olde Molar Bands are cutting up my tongue ! I've been reading an online book for the past week and have not felt like posting (see! I'm a lazy bum!) It's so much easier to stare than type sometimes . I'm trying to reconnect myself so I'm going to post about Ye Olde Molar Bands in just a moment. I've also gotta mention this weekends adventure so Stay Tuned! .

The braces went to the ball this weekend...but there was a catch. A BIGGGG CATCH!!!

• 1. I didn't get a chance to buy some shoes to go with my dress (translation: outfit change).
  2. It was semi-formal. Always read the invation for yourself
  3. It snowed...BAD the night of the party!!!! We're talking 9.5 inches ladies and gents.
  4. I was the only person in my 20's...dateless.
  5. There was a 15-20 year age gap in between me and anyone else . Sad to say...I was the eldest of the 20 somethings crowd.

After that party we went to a 21st b-day party. These kids have got to learn how to drink in moderation or else they'll end up like the birthday boy...with his head in a sink tossing up his cookies for majority of the party. I wasn't the oldest of the 20 somethings this time but I was with my sister who had a date and hung out with him majority of the night. Little Alona over here sat with my aunt and talked with her instead. There was a girl with braces there! But we never exchanged words

Sad to say...the braces have NOT changed my social standing.

Sunday I had a great conversation with the clerk at a store for office supplies HE HAD BRACES! While purchasing my can of compressed air (it was a commodity that day ). I saw a little glimmer of hope when I noticed something shinning on his bottom row. I got bold and asked "Do you have braces?" He said yup and smiled big for me! Then we exchanged some orthodontic lingo and I walked out of their feeling socially better than I did the night before. I should've given him a link to AW! I'm a slacker...

MOLAR BAND MONDAY!!!!!!!!!!

So much for short wait times. My wait was a whopping 21 minutes. Oh well. The appointment was at 2:50. I tried to get it bumped up to at least 3:45 so I didn't have to use my PTO, but in the end the Ortho's office prevailed. I had never seen that many people in the office on a Monday ever before! After finally getting back I picked out a new lig color. I don't think this was supposed to happen but my silver ligs started to look like a shimmery green and I only had them a week! I got the blue ligs I was thinking about. I like it! I'll post the pics of my new ligs tomorrow. Anywho. They sat me down changed my top ligs and wire let me brush and floss after they took those spacers out. Whew! Those rubber ones stink after they come out! I didn't have half as much gunk in between my teeth this time as I did last time so flossing was a breeze. I sat back down. The molar bands were fitted, popped off, my teeth were smoothed, (the glue from the broken brackets was still there.) the adhesive was put on the molar bands and the bands were put back in place. My tech had those cotton thingamabob's that were used to clean the excess goop left behind, I was attacked by the bite stick to get the bands in their proper positions. That cool bonding blue light was put on them and I was finished!

The whole process was really slobbery by the way

I noticed immediately that these cruel little things have spikes on them! My poor tongue. It's never been through so much anguish before! I've kinda gotten used to them now but when I eat the spikes snag my tongue occasionally. So much for my lively hood...

On another note! I forgot it was my one month anniversary fully braced so the date passed already but I'd like to wish my self a happy 1 month 1 week and 6 day anniversay (wow that's almost 2 weeks)! If I had it down to the hour, know that that would have been put in there too!

Hello againbrace

Wow! Very, very, very interesting. I've viewed the first 5 of pages for your story under bracedagain. You are being well taken care of by your gum and alignment team so far! Do you have an estimated amount of time this will take for this round? It's good the process is going slow so you can have optimum results and not just something that looks good on the surface only.

It's so important to have healthy gums and to brush well and FLOSS!!! Honestly...before I got these braces I wasn't one to brush my teeth more than once every day unless I was going to something special and I only flossed as often as once a year . I was lucky to not have any gum issues seeing I haven't been to the dentist before all of this started since I was about 8, maybe even 7 .

Anywho! Was it the gum ordeal that caused the relapse? At my ortho's office when I got my adjustment and spacers I was eaves dropping (:P shame on me!) and heard that an appointment with one of the patients took longer because she had some gum swelling going on and the techs couldn't get her powerchain to stay in place.

No worries on the hi-jack! It's nice to have someone else take the wheel every now and then !

HeyBuckey, a late happy brace-iversary!! I did see againbrace's post re the criss-crossed ligs - thanks so much for asking about it and thanks to Ken for answering! It's good to know why they're doing things, I never think to ask at the time.

That warning about root shortening is pretty scary to me. My skipped a beat when I learned I could possibly lose all of my teeth after they are straightened. Lucky indeed you are! If they did give you a timeline it just might be more disappointing than not knowing when you're actually getting them off. There comes a time in your life when you just take whatever life throws at you...well, kind of.

Ah yes! Tongue thrusting. I can sympathize with that seeing, ever since I got these braces, I've became a clencher. That by the way, is NOT cool! They don't have anything to fix the thrusting problem before the retainer? I guess it really doesn't matter since your teeth are all strapped in...I was told to chew sugar-free gum because my condition is similar to teething. One of the techs even suggested a teething ring .

I'm very honored and glad you're enjoying my thread . I had been hanging around AW for months before I got braces and 5 days after I finally got them, thinking of an approach to this thread. The week I got the braces, I figured out my username (HeyBuckey!) and wanted to wait for my teeth to stop hurting so I could think creatively. When that happened I thought, "OMG! Why don't I just speak from my everyday experience with these along with their movement and the adjustments!" It sure does help me feel better...especially on chinese food Fridays at work when I try biting into an eggroll . Now instead of feeling all embarrassed I laugh...HISTERICALLY!!!

I tend to feel the same way (you know, the looking like a freak part ). I do a lot of things that I know look kind of freakish to others at my job. Somehow, they love me anyway! I even get a couple of chuckles from them . Amazingly, I'm working on a book. It's more serious but will have some funny parts in it. I may have to start up a story on adult braces because I don't see one yet and just for the heck of it!

LOL!!! Sounds great to me! I gotta go read your story now to see how your bracket ordeal/victory went (that one with the touchdown dance in the kitchen ). That's pretty groddy. I looked at my ligs when that happened thinking I got a bad deal...I probably would go back and say, "I asked for silver! Not shimmering kiwi..."

Thank you, thank you, and thank you! I can't wait until it's over. I look at my teeth wondering what they would look like if I got my braces off today. Yeah, I know it sounds impatient seeing I've only had them on for almost 2 months total . What can I say, 2.5 years is a long time !

Hiya! And thanks for the late brace-iversary (I like that saying!). Oooh goody!!! I like to know why they do things too...I could just about bug the crap out of them trying to squeeze information from them. That's how I learned about chewing gum or a teething ring for my clenching. I'd always forget to ask them questions until that clenching really started to worry me...sometimes it sucks but you have to get fed up inorder to remember what to ask them. [/b]
