What happens when you stare at your teeth too long (pics)

#1 Post by alibracket »

THis is what happens when you stare at your teeth too long (and have insomnia. and work the reference desk at a library in the age of google)

You start noticing things. Like the fact that your teeth are very different and not quite as symmetrical as you thought they were. Its an obsession that seems to be leading into tooth dysmorphia.

Furthermore I would like to state that I think my ortho is a werewolf. Except that werewolves dont like silver. But i swear he only comes around once in a blue moon.

Despite my teeth being vastly different sizes/shapes (which has more to do with my gums than with orthodontics) and all the long weeks without seeing my ortho. I will say I am very happy with my treatment so far. And those days when i get a little down, I just have to pull up that photo of my teeth from the first day in braces and i dont really feel/so bad

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who looks at everyone elses teeth as much as I look at mine! I thought it was some sort of mental disorder :). I would also think about how their teeth would look should they decide to get braces. These braces have made me a total head case :P.

Your doing great Alibracket! Stop looking at your teeth! As you can see, it causes some sort of a visual disturbance.

Lynne- Yeah i stare at other peoples teeth constantly. And i try to be slick about it because i remember feeling so self conscious about my own teeth. But im sure im not. In magazines and on tv - im always staring-Seeing who has those hollywood teeth that are all sawed off and even. Funny- not all actors and actresses have perfect teeth-i guess i never paid attention.

Hey Buckey-
Thanks for the reassurance. I think my girlfirend is sick of me using her camera every other night. Or worse- forcing her to take pics of my teeth.

Today I stopped by to see the werewolf- I broke one of my brackets(My girlfriend thinks im doing this on purpose so i can see my ortho more...im not sure if shes wrong). I was secretly hoping that he wouldsay -" hey ALi- you're doing gfreat. While you are here let me just go ahead and give you a new wire and powerchain"

but no such luck. Progress yes- but no new equipment for me to obsess over. Guess i gotta wait until JAnuary.

However i was able to procure a copy of my before pictures from my ortho. I wasnt able to take before pictures because I got my braces 10 minutes after my consultation. Same day. Didnt even get to have a last meal. Will post when i get a scanner.

oh boy! Can I ever relate! lol... I also admit I get somewhat excited to make "emergency" visits to the ortho; secretly hoping I will get adjusted early, or at least leave with some reassurance. Alas, the ortho did not pop over on either of my "emergency" visits, and actually didn't even make an appearance at my most recent adjustment. Frustrating!! The feeling that our orthos are so uninvolved in our treatments is probably at the root of why we obsess over our teeth!!!

Hi Ali, you are not alone! There are more of us staring at our teeth all the time and noticing things... I look at my teeth on my way to and from work whenever I'm stopped at a red light... Just like you I notice discrepancies, irregularities, teeth that are rotated, teeth that are too wide or not aligned yet and a whole variety of other problems. And the funny thing is that in the last 3 weeks at least 12 different people asked me why I got braces... can't they see what I'm seeing :?: :o Apparently not :)

Your post was hysterical... the comments about reference desk in the age of google and your ortho being a werewolf :D Hope he's not that hairy...
And your teeth look great :!: You must be near the end of your sentence - lucky you 8)

Havn't posted much lately. Last week I had to put my 13 year old dog (and faithful eating buddy) to sleep. Then I was in Chicago. A lot going on.

Not much progress to post but my teeth are killing me! And now all of a sudden they are sensitive to hot and cold. There hasnt been a ton of movement except the gap between the lateral incisors are closing up.

I do want to make my smile more broad. Im not sure if this is something I can do with my regular braces though ive seen people with Damons doing it. My arch is kinda narrow. But other than that no complaints. Im counting down until the days I can take them off!

Your teeth are looking amazing. How much longer do you have to go. I have called at times because a bracket popped of or something and all but one time they said just wait until your next appointment....argh....I love my ortho, she is always there to see and check things. I have never gotten out of there without her seeing my mouth

I still got a ways to go. Ive only technically had 1 adjustment though ive gone in there for 'make believe appointments' of my own creation. My ortho gave me 18-24 monthes. So that will land me somewhere between January 2011 and July 2011. Im hoping more toward JAnuary because that will fall right on my 28th birthday.

My ortho is cool. Hes a little on the older side which i like. Hes pretty much on auto pilot. I have a pretty easy case though- no extractions or impacted teeth so that may be why my appointments are so spread out.

Or my ortho is hella cheap and doesnt want to change my wire...
