New Here! My "Introduction" Post...

#1 Post by ComposerRyan »

Hello everybody, I am new here and just found this forum community today! It's great to see everyone out here and I have read through many of the posts already and it's great to see that people feel and share in the same things I am going through as an adult with braces.

I am 24 years old, live in Indiana (USA) and decided to get braces about 7-8 months ago. Before I got braces, I was very self-aware of my crooked teeth. It affected everything in my life: my friendships, relationships, just everything. My top teeth (the front two) overlapped each other, so for me, it was very noticeable. People noticed it of course, but I was so sensitive and self-aware about it...I just couldn't stand it! Especially being around everyone who had straight teeth. I have a lot of goals in my life and felt that in order to get to where I want to go, I have to get braces and get past the years in them.

The day I got braces I was SO excited and felt very fortunate. Afterwords, though, I quickly had to overcome my embarrassment of having braces. I was SOOO embarrassed walking into work the first time with braces. Even though I felt very fortunate to have them on, I was already wishing that the whole thing was done and over with and that my teeth were already straight! I felt like the whole world was staring at me...I was probably being too sensitive, but I couldn't help but feel the weight of their stares.

But now, here I am, making progress. :) I still feel self-aware about my braces but not nearly as much as I used to and I hope I become stronger personally because of this experience.

Anyway, I'll be checking in here from time to time and thanks to everyone for sharing your stories - it has given me perspective that I'm not the only adult out there with braces! :D Tomorrow is yet another appointment - wish me luck!

Ryan

Hey ryan, welcome to AW. You mentioned Indiana, and your nickname is 'composer', does that mean you might be a student in Bloomington? I'm an alumni from their music school, back in the day.

Thanks everyone for the welcomes and encouragement! It has been quite the adventure with braces. :) My appointment with the ortho a couple days ago went well and I'm hoping progress is going by as fast as it should be. The fate of my teeth are in my ortho's hands though so like eveveryone else here, I'm putting complete trust in my orthodontist.

By the way, I'm not a student in Bloomington but plan on going to school for music composition. How was it at Bloomington and did you still pursue your career in music after college?

Thanks again everyone!

Nice thing about getting older

I'm 59 years old and three weeks into my braces. The nice thing about getting older is that you're not as self-conscious about these things. Also, I get a lot of sympathy.

But I think there are different opinions on it...I HATE it when I start realizing that the person I am talking to is feeling extremely sorry for me...that actually makes me feel worse in a weird way. lol :D I like a certain amount of kindness of course, but not to the point of where they are talking in a certain way just because I'm wearing braces. I hate that! I don't like to be felt sorry for all of the time.

But, people are people and everyone reacts in a different way of course...I've actually had people almost laugh in my face (they try to control it though) and I've learned just to grin and kind of laugh back to let them know, "It's okay." That seems to lighten the tension and it's like I'm saying to them, "I've seen myself in the mirror too, and I do look funny, don't I?" I feel that I'm learning to not take myself too seriously and to just lighten up and not be so embarrassed all the time like I was. I'm still working on it though. :)

You are in the process of getting a better smile, so if they start to feel sorry for you it is their problem, not yours. Staying optimistic is a good way to go. :D
