hi,

stay calm.. I really don't think it's that bad. Some of my trays don't cover my teeth properly and haven't had any problems with that. My teeth have still moved as they were supposed to. So I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that at all. I've had one or two aligners that looked similar. Even if the attachment doesn't fit perfectly, it's not the end of the world, and yours looks like it is fitting in the bubble OK. I wouldn't go back three aligners -- that just sounds painful! If I were in your position, I would stay in the aligner you are wearing and see your ortho as soon as possible. Definitely no need to panic. Good luck!

Pompompadom,

I looked at your picture and it appears the bubble on your aligner isn't lining up with its attachment. It looks like your ortho is wanting to go back to where these line up again, then move forward again and hope the attachment follows.

This happened in my case and my ortho filed off the attachment and used my current aligner as a template to replace it. There were other problems that occured after this and I ended up with a mid-course correction where all of my attachments were filed off and new impressions taken. This caused about a 6 week delay in treatment.

The backing up a few trays and trying to move forward again is probably the best first option. I don't know if there are other things that can help. In my case the problem attachments (there were more than 1) involved tooth rotation, which my orthodontist noted were some of the more difficult to predict movements.

Good luck and hope this helps!!

It looks to me like the pp said - that the attachment isn't lining up with the bubble causing it to make the aligner stick out from the tooth because it's pressing it outwards wherever the attachment is making contact.

I don't know if I'd go 3 trays back either - just sounds painful for the teeth that have moved properly. If it was one tray might not be too bad but 3, I'm not sure I'd do.

Maybe the ortho could file off and replace the attachment so that it fits in the right spot like the pp said. I'm not sure if moving the attachment a bit would affect the overall outcome of treatment if it's not in the same spot as they planned for it to be (as in if it would move to the final position they want it to). That would be a question for your ortho whether that is a good solution and won't affect the final outcome or whether you should get new impressions/trays and have him file it off to use your current trays to keep them in place until the new comes in.

With mine it wasn't an attachment that didn't fit in the tray just wouldn't go on and it turned out that one of my teeth didn't move as predicted. They filed off all my attachments and had me use the current trays as retainers while they did impressions and new trays (with a new attachment on the tooth that wasn't moving properly).

In a situation where your aligner doesn't fit properly, it's a good idea to go in and see the orthodontist. Usually the solution is one of the following:

-go back to the aligner that fits properly
-remove or smooth down attachments that are causing the ill-fitting
-continue with current tray wear
-take new impressions and begin refinement or mid-course correction

The decision will depend on each individual situation. Let your orthodontist have all the information to help you achieve the best result in the shortest time possible :). Good luck.

Thank you so much for your replies. I'm seeing the ortho on Monday. I'm really gutted, I'd booked a 'out of braces' holiday. Looks like munching and drinking all day without a care has gone out the window.

I went back to 17, it wasn't that uncomfortable at all. Just pulled on one tooth, what does that say?!

Also I spoke to my ortho and he said whilst refinements were free I'd gave to pay for a midcourse correction!! Is this normal? Anyone know how much?

I'm going to end up selling a bloody kidney to get my teeth straight at this rate!!

Right, I'm calming down now.

Xx

Hey - I had this exact same issue. I moved back three aligners and had more IPR. That still didn't do the job though, so in the end my ortho was able to file just a small bit off the top of my aligner so it fit in the bubble as it was only out by the tiniest bit and its all moving fine now.

Strangely moving back three aligners wasn't that painful. I moved from 10 to 7. Aligner 8 the first time around was my most painful but didn't hurt going back - don't know if there is less resistance because your teeth have been in that position previously (rather than moving some place new with a new aligner). Only thing was that when I finally got to aligner 11 that was the most painful move yet.

Good luck!
