question for who has had lower jaw surgery for overjet/bite

#1 Post by kaysh »

Hey, I have a 10mm overjet, and I am having lower jaw surgery to move my jaw forward.
I don't like how my face looks when I hold my jaw forward in the correct position. I think I look angry and too full in the face, and other people agree. Did the end result for your surgery look like what you looked like when you held your jaw forward before the surgery?

No, it won't look like it does when you are holding your jaw forward. When you hinge your jaw forward it tends to give a slightly underbite-like look. The result of BSSO will be much more aesthetically pleasing.

The jaw is moved forward and may be tilted as well, so just jutting your chin forward is not an exact representation. Soft tissues also play a part. You can't quite guess how your skin/muscles will look when your jaw is shifted.

I had a 12mm overjet and had a BSSO done moving my jaw about 10mm forward and up on 12 Jan. I've not taken any post op pictures but everyone commented how "balanced" I look from the side now. This is compared to the obvious "small chin" I had before. My personal opinion is that my face didn't change... except I know it did because I can finally bite properly now. And although I'm 23 days post op, there is still slight swelling where the plates and screws are so I guess my face isn't quite "done" yet.

I would just like to reiterate what the others said. I had lower jaw surgery in December. Like you, I would pull my jaw forward thinking that's how it would look and it didn't look right for other reasons. But it's done and I'm happy with the way it looks now.

Short answer is no, its looks more harmonious than that. My lower jaw was also rotated upwards so that my face looks shorter. But I also had 2 jaw surgery with impaction on the top jaw.
Good luck with yours.
