Getting Ceramic Braces and Bite Ramps on Mon 11/23 YIKES!!!

#1 Post by FeelinKindaDarla »

I am getting braces to correct a deep bite, cross bite and general lack luster smile. After consulting with my ortho we are going with the mini ceramic brackets and he mentioned bite ramps but until today, I didn't know what that meant exactly and now I'm a bit more anxious about those than I am the braces. My understanding is they are harder to get used to than the brackets.

Anyone have expereinces/tips/suggestions for dealing with the ramps? How about the ceramic brackets?

Welcome and dont be afraid...

The ceramic brackets i can not answer as i have a full mouth of metal.

But the bite ramps...I can tell you everything you could want to know....I had them for about 2 years during my treatment.

They are made of a composite material that is put on your molars. Then it is hardened by that little blue light that hardened the glue to apply your brackets....You will see it...it gets a little warm but no big deal....but anyways...the ramps are a huge pain in the @$$ at first. It will take a little time getting used to your bite remaining open. And it takes some time getting used to eating things as the only place in your mouth that meets is at your molars. (think of someone with an open bite, this is what they deal with all the time). the purpose of the ramps is to get the teeth on the bottom to line up without hitting your top teeth or the brackets. they are really not that bad but do take some getting used to as does everything else in your mouth.

Oh and the reason I had mine for 2 years is because my teeth are very stubborn and didnt want to move very fast.

One word of wisdom....dont get your bite ramps on the same day you plan on donating blood....it is hard to eat and you need nutrition to give blood without passing out :)

Thank you sdawdy for taking the time to answer :D It really helps hearing from someone who dealt with the bite ramps. I'm not sure how ling I will have them, I'm hoping my teeth aren't as stubborn as yours - I'm told my whole treatment time should be 18 months so it sounds like I have it better than some for my Class II deep bite.

And good advice about the donating blood! I am a regular giver.

Update...

Well, I had my braces on about 4 hours and one of my bite ramps broke clean off. This was right before the Thanksgiving holiday, so my ortho said to just limp through with the one ramp and head into the office when I returned home. So I did. When I got home I went in, they said I was doing fine with the one ramp so they weren't going to replace the broken one, then asked how my pain tolerance was because they wanted to start treatment with the elastics. Boy, the bands really put on the pressure! After about a week of this my bite ramp broke - again. So, I got into my ortho later that day and in addition to putting on a new bite ramp, I got my first adjustment... at this point I'd only had them on maybe three weeks! I figured I wouldn't have to go back until January but my ortho said "No, come back on Dec 30th as scheduled." So... I will have had two bite ramps break then fixed, added bands, and had TWO adjustments by the time I've had these things on ONE month!!! Is that normal???

Also... I'm rather impatient... understatement... :o) When will I start to see results??? I'm scheduled to only be in these things a total of 18 months which I know isn't all THAT long but still...

Bite Ramps

#6 Post by Lynn123 »

I'd never even heard of bite ramps until the ortho put them on the back of my 2 front teeth when I got my braces put on yesterday. I don't know how I'll ever get used to them.

Lynn 123 - I had a little warning about the bite ramps so I had time to do some research. I'll tell ya though, KNOWING about them didn't help much. They are SO awkward and foreign, and getting used to them takes time and practice. I'm almost a month in, and I'm still trying ti figure out how to co-exist with them. Good luck!

I got braced 2 days ago complete with bite ramps.

Somehow they don't feel like they actually work as I still smashed my top teeth into the bottom bracket just hours after leaving the ortho (which created the single most painful moment so far in this process).

I don't see how I'll be able to chew anything as long as I have these things in so I'm resigning myself to a diet of smoothies and mashed potatoes for awhile. I might also venture into 'cake soup' before too long (a slice of cake mashed up in a bowl of milk until it's slurp-able) or anything else that's still palatable if it's liquified.
