Change in bite
I'm only on my 3rd set of trays but already my molars have moved to the point to where they no longer match up top and bottom so when I bite down my back teeth do not touch. Seems like my bottom molars are going to be done moving outwards at the end of the 7th tray whereas the top molars won't catch up to them until the 15th tray. This makes eating more difficult since I can't completely bite all the way down on food anymore. I'm hoping that my top and bottom molars will once again align to be able to fit in grove with each other when I'm done with Invisalign. Has anyone else had this problem of not being able to bite properly during their treatment, and if so, did it correct itself in the end? Thanks. John.

Hi ChicagoJohn,
Where in Chicago are you? I am north side transplant to the south side...
My molars have always matched up (but I think because I had braces as a teenager), but my front wonky tooth has only proceeded to get wonkier during these past 6 trays (I started tray 7 tonight). Looks terrible to me, but I do know that in some cases, things have to get worse before they get better. Sounds like that may also be the case with you.
If you have such detailed info about your course of treatment, it is quite likely that you just have to *grin* and bear it while things get sorted out over the next months. I certainly wouldn't panic!
Have you tried Ethiopian food (a couple of great places on Broadway Ave.) or the like? It is soothing food to me - soft, but still enough texture to be satisfying... perfect when your teeth don't want to cooperate!
Best of luck!

I live on the north side. Ravenswood/Lincoln Square area. I've been to a couple of Ethiopian places on Broadway and it's actually some of my favorite food in Chicago! The one on Lawrence and Broadway is really good. The name is not coming to me at the moment though.
Yeah, in watching my clin check video I can see that my lower molars move outwards quite a bit in the first several trays while the top molars stay where they are until about tray 7 when they start to move. At least that's what the video portrays anyways. I wish they could move both the top and the bottom together but I guess it'll even out by around June. I've only got to do 15 trays total so no big deal really. But if my bite doesn't match up like it did before I started Invisalign then hopefully I can use my free refinements to fix it.
I think you're right about the things getting worse before they get better with Invisalign. For instance, my dentist filed spaces between some of my front teeth and I'm looking like a bum for a while until my teeth tighten up and fill in those spaces.
I'm not too familiar with the south side but what area are you in? How about that warm weather today! How many trays do you have to do?

Do you mean Demera (across from the Green Mill)? I like it there, too, although Ethiopian Diamond further north on Broadway is my favorite!
I live in Beverly - 10 minutes south of Hyde Park. We love the old houses here... I am in Lincoln Square every week for dance class; I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could find a home just like the one I have now...
I took photos last night before switching to tray 7 (I have 12U and only 7L), and my front tooth has never looked so bad! It really wasn't too far out of alignment before Invisalign, but now I can't go without my trays because it looks so awful. Since I have more trays, I am not going to worry about it. It HURTS this morning, so I take that as a good sign. My theory is that my treatment was set up to make big moves on the lowers first and now that they are almost done (hopefully not too many refinements), it is setting about taking care of the upper arch.
Do you have 15 trays on both top and bottom? I wish mine matched up better so I wouldn't be in this one lower tray for 12 full weeks. My ortho won't consider refinements until both arches are complete...
It is supposed to be just as warm and sunny today... Enjoy!

Yeah! Demera is the place. Ethiopian Diamond is actually the only one that I haven't been to yet. Maybe I'll check it out this weekend. I'm craving something spicy lately.
I love Lincoln Square. Everything that I need is within walking distance. And once you get used to the old broken down seats and slanted screens at the Davis, it's a pretty good place watch a movie. However, with Invisalign I can no longer enjoy pop corn at movies!
I'm not sure I'm familiar with Beverly but I know Hyde Park and the University area is beautiful. I've toured the Robey (sp?) House a couple of times. And I love the whole museum campus area. I've only been in Chicago for 5 years so I've still got a lot of exploring to do.
I'm doing 15 on top and only 7 on bottom. I think that Invisalign, unlike traditional braces, has the ability to move teeth one at a time in some situations and in order for certain teeth to move up front, the ones in the back have to move first so it appears that nothing is happening for a while. At least that's what I'm hoping. I know I have a bit of that going on right now too where my front teeth are really crooked and I've noticed no movement in them at all yet after 3 trays yet the bottoms have really shifted a lot already. To make things appear even worse, my dentist filed these gaps in between my most visible front teeth to relieve the crowding and it looks ridiculous when I have my aligners off. I hope they fill in soon. I keep watching my clin check video to tell myself that it's all going to even out in the end. I'm sure you're front tooth will start some good movement at some point. There will probably be a couple of trays that focus on that tooth after the rest of the teeth have shifted into place.

Do give Ethiopian Diamond a try. It isn't a fancy place, but the food is great and the service very friendly. Not too far from Lincoln Square; in fact, I often head to Ethio for dinner after my dance class (at Old Town, of course). Not much happens here in Beverly, so it is a bit like living in the country; it is a beautiful area - third largest historic district in the US - and I love my large garden and old house, so it is a good fit for now.
When I started treatment, I didn't really understand that most (maybe all?) of my teeth would be moving. I had braces as a teenager, so I really only needed to straighten two teeth on top and the four front lowers, but I swear now my lower arch has widened (which would make sense because I needed room to accommodate the crowded teeth). The change in my smile is dramatic to me. I have always had a big smile, and now when I smile, it feels huge! I like it (thank goodness), but it has been surprising.
On my upper arch, the back teeth were moving for the first five trays with nothing visible happening in front, and tray six created a gap between the two front teeth. I look goofy now, but I suspect the work from this point forward will be on those front teeth now that there is room for my problem tooth to "back into" the created space. What a journey, eh?!
Enjoy this amazing weather!

bite
I don't live anywhere near Chicago, but I can say that my bite is pretty crazy right now too (tray 4 on top, traditional brackets on bottom). I find myself not chewing my food very thoroughly and practically swallowing things whole. My top front teeth connect first when I bite, so I'm barely getting the benefit of my molars at all. Like you said, hopefully it will all be worth it. Wish I could see my clin-check video - it would help with motivation!

I am actually glad that I have never looked at my clin-check video! I have heard from so many people that they have been disappointed when movement doesn't happen exactly like in the video. From my understanding, the video is just an approximation of treatment, so I am happy moving forward and taking each tray as it comes.
I am seeing improvement (my bottom teeth are perfectly straight now - I just started the final tray) so that keeps me motivated. My ortho still thinks I'll need a full series of refinements on the lowers (up to 7 trays in his estimation), but I don't quite understand how to make "really straight" even straighter (unless the refinements help my roots somehow without changing the alignment...)
I have found it so interesting how much things - bite, alignment - can change in the space of few sets of trays! One ortho I saw (I thought he was an Invisalign ortho, but apparently not) told me that "those little plastic trays can't move teeth efficiently at all." Hmm...

That's exactly how my bite is. It used to be perfectly fine before I started Invisalign but now just 3 trays into it and all of a sudden only my front eye teeth are able to connect when I bite down. My molars don't touch at all and it makes it really hard to thoroughly chew food. My dentist says it'll all work itself out though so we'll see.

It's like that with me too. Only two of my teeth meet now. I guess I'm just kind of shocked that it only took 3 trays to make that happen. It causes me to chew food differently than I used to and I can't help but sometimes feel like people are staring at me when I eat because I move my jaw all around trying to cycle each bite through my two teeth that touch so that I can properly mash food up before swallowing.
By the way, myhollywoodsmile, I read a good bit of your blog the day that I first got my aligners put in and it really helped me relax and get rid of some of the anxiety that the first tray gave me. That's a great piece of work you've done there. It's a really amazing journal with some great writing. Thanks for doing that.

My orthodontist explained that the Invisalign trays will cause a gap in the rear teeth due to the thickness of the aligners. This pushes (intrudes) the molars into jawbones. My understanding is this corrects itself after treatment.
In my case, I have a deep bite, so my orthodontist has worked to create a gap between my upper and lower molars. My final treatment, which should start this week will involve wearing my final aligners with the part of the trays covering my molars cut off. The remaining segments cover 8 upper and 8 lower front teeth. I'm not sure how long this will take - the gap looks like about 2 millimeters.
