That awkward stage

#1 Post by amy »

Man I hope this is only the awkward stage of braces. Where things have to get worse before they can get better. My teeth just look and feel so weird.

I had one raised canine, my lovely snaggle-tooth, that is being drawn down pretty rapidly. However, the tooth next to it, which was aligned with my front teeth, is being pushed back and sideways. It wasn't "activated" and so isn't attached to my archwire. It's frustrating to see a tooth that was straight become all mangled. My front teeth are also being pulled forward and a space has developed between them, all making me feel a little buck toothed.

So please tell me this is normal and it will get better. Because right now it's pretty disheartening to be so uncomfortable and give up so much just to see my teeth seemingly get worse. Actually, it really sucks!

P.S. If one more person offers me candy I love but can't have, I honestly can't be held responsible for my actions!

Hi Amy,

Yes, it's pretty normal. Things may look wonky as teeth are shifting around trying to find their optimal position. I've had my fair share of freak-outs over things moving in the wrong direction. It will all work out in the end.

You have to have faith in your ortho. A lot of times things get worse before they get better. It sucks but it is worth it.
