April 2010 Buddies

I forgot to update my progress. I'm at about 5 weeks post op now.
Swelling: Pretty much 100% gone
Numbness: About 90% back to normal. The feeling is back in the left side of my nose, but it feels different. Not sure what it is, maybe thing still need to get settled in there.
Things feel pretty solid in there, they told me to stick to blended diet but I've sort of been cheating and eating soft stuff like ravioli and spaghetti. I feel like my range of motion is pretty much back to where it was before the surgery, its hard to tell for sure until the splint is removed. The splint is going to be taken off next week and I should be in the ortho's hands from that point on.

Hi nineeyes, glad to hear you're doing so well. Very encouraging for those of us still stuck in post-surgery misery.
Hi Audra, i've not got a splint in, thank heavens, but i'm still horribly uncomfortable. I swear my face feels like it's about to explode it's so swollen
Sleeping last night was 1 hour awake, 1 hour asleep, just cannot get comfortable. Still, i'm choosing to count my blessings - no pain, I can take my pills, and i'm otherwise feeling ok - must keep focusing on the positives!
Yes, Graham's blog has been making me chuckle. Don't know how he's kept so chipper throughout his ordeal!

nineeyes - good to hear about the swelling and numbness. I am anxious for my swelling to go down. How do you eat food with the splint in? I find it so awkward, I think I would choke. Good for you for trying!
descantus - just hang in there. You'll see things change a lot after the first week. Even though I'm still swollen it is NOTHING like the first week where I felt like my face was not my own. It felt like plastic.
And here's something to cheer you up. Even on a liquid diet, you can still pop chocolate buttons in your mouth and let them melt. I had a one small package from the British Shop and they fit easily between the splint and my lower teeth. Yum!

Hey Audra,
It's not so much eating as it is swallowing food whole. Still much more filling than drinking 6-8 shakes each day. It is somewhat awkward, but I think I've worked it out so it goes down smoothly. There were a few choking incidents, but it was worth it for me
Definitely try to keep that positive attitude descantus, I think that helped me a lot during the initial weeks of recovery. You will be over that first week soon and feel much better.

Glad everyone is doing mostly ok. Descantus, the sleeping pills really helped me - you might think about asking for some. Interesting about the anesthesia. They gave me some med right before they wheeled me away to the OR that they said would have an amnesiac effect. They weren't kidding. I remember waving bye to mom then it's a total blank. I'm surprised they don't do that for more people.
I have my 3 week appointment today. Hopefully won't failboat this bands changing like I did last week. I sorta want to have a margarita beforehand to chilllllllll, but they probably wouldn't approve lol
I looked in the mirror today and all of a sudden I'm starting to see my face back. Interesting. Go away swelling! I gotta say, that 80% swelling gone in 2 weeks that was on my dr's take home instructions sesame was total poop in my case! I'm still pretty puffy!

cvn - nice that you got meds before being wheeled into operating room. They don't do that here anymore. I was wide awake and aware when I went in and hopped up on the table. As far as your swelling, you and I are in the same boat. That 80% gone by 2 weeks was a pile of hooey for me too. I still look really puffy too.
My three week appointment did not exactly go as planned, but the jaw is fine and they're still happy with the results, so that's good. I'm able to change the bands, but the one that goes to the bottom molar in the back is hard to get, especially with the corner of my lips all split. Anbesol kinda helps so I'm just trying to suck it up and deal.
How's everyone doing this weekend? Nineeyes - did you get that splint out yet? cvn- those xrays! I'm speechless! You'll be sending airport THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. THIS IS SPAM PLEASE REPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATOR. crazy forever more! Hope you're doing well
I'm now a week post op and things are pretty good, swelling is still there but past its peak. No pain, lots of energy, sleeping ok without pills (though only because i've given up on the nighttime head elevation) and i'm enjoying the delights of blended cheesecake - this recovery lark isn't all bad!

cvn - what was planned for your appointment that didn't happen? Again, I'll say your x-rays are crazy! Wow. Looks like they got you all sorted out though compared to the previous x-rays.
descantus - I was thinking of you yesterday and was going to ask you today how you are doing at your one week mark. You are doing so great! I'm very happy for you that recovery is going so smoothly.
I'm 3 weeks and 1 day today. Went back to work on Thursday. Glad it was a short week as I was exhausted by the end of the day yesterday. Everyone at work was so complimentary about how I look. They told me that my entire face has changed - which is has. I was feeling a big "unsure" about how I looked until I went back to work and heard what everyone has to say.
Still sleeping on the couch with my head partially elevated. I don't mind as this couch is very comfy. My hubby sets his alarm and comes and climbs in with me and snuggles for an hour each morning. I get my splint out at 3:45 PM on Wednesday. Am SO happy about that. I'm going to have Kraft dinner for supper.[/b]

Still have that splint in unfortunately. My surgeon seems pretty firm about keeping it in there for the full 6 weeks. Luckily that will be next Tuesday, so I should have it out around the same time as Audra.
I feel ready to get this out though. I was so impatient I ate pizza the other day. I doubt they mean for you to chew with the splint in though and it's probably not recommended (I think I'm still supposed to be on a blended diet). It was a tough battle but I managed to get down 4 slices.
Overall, except for this splint, I feel like I'm back to normal now.

Blended the burger patty (with barbeque sauce and cheddar) and half the bun and the tomato. Took of the onions - which my husband told them 3 TIMES on the phone not to put on the burger, and was on the ticket not to put on the burger.
Tasted REALLY good. Unfortunately didn't blend enough - or didn't add enough liquid.....because it exploded all over. The catheter tubing came off the end of the syringe and the pressure caused it to fly everywhere. It was on my face, in my hair, on my shirt, on the carpet, the couch, the humidifier, and on my husband who was 5 feet away to the left of me, the curtains behind him, the wall behind him, the couch he was sitting on.
But again - it tasted REALLY good.
