Whats my surgery called?

#1 Post by Emmauk »

Hi all

Not sure if anyone can help me but i am trying to research my problems and work out what the name of the surgery is that i need.

I have an open bite and have been told i need double jaw surgery. The bottom jaw needs to come forward either 8 or 15mm and the top jaw needs to have the angle changed. I was under the impression the surgeon was going to angle more i.e. leave the front where it is and make my molars end up lower than they currently are. I have been trying to research all about this and cant seem to find much where the angle goes that way i can find surgeries where the molars are made higher by removing bone but not lower.

Have i got confused?

I will ask my OD when i go in for my records apt before getting brace fitted so i am sure but wondered what you thought.

I think the rest of my problems will be fixed by the OD i.e the crossbite and midline correction.

Any help appreciated.

8 or 15?
are you not sure? or do you mean between 8 and 15?

that's sometimes called "clockwise rotation".
how your jaw is moved makes no difference with regard to the surgical procedure in most cases, so there isn't really a term you can google that shows you your exact jaw movements.

No im not sure, it hasnt actually been explained to me in that much detail its only what i have picked up when the OD and surgeon speak to the nurses.

A clockwise rotation was mentioned but again i dont know what that means, the surgeon briefly said angle the top jaw down and bring the bottom jaw forward.

I asked him how it would affect my profile and he said " put your bottom jaw as far forward as you can, relax, it'll be like that but nicer"

He wasnt personable atall but i kind of figure i dont need him to be my best friend but i do know he has been a surgeon for 30+ years and is highly respected for his work but unfortunately not his attitude.

yeah, put your bottom jaw forward as far as you can and rotate it ;-)

the rotations are with regard to a profile shot from the right. so "clockwise rotation" pretty much means what you described above.

Here's a youtube animation (not gory) of the surgery to correct an open bite. It is still a Lefort 1, but the cuts are made differently than if the jaw were to be brought forward. The lower jaw surgery is called a BSSO.

The surgery shown in the u tude clip is the same as most that i can find where bone is taken away in the upper jaw (cheek area), the front teeth stay more or less the same but the back teeth end up higher. Im starting to think maybe this is what i will be having, not lowering the back teeth as i thought?

So this procedure is the Le fort I and the other is BSSO?,

I'll double check when i go in for my appointment but i really want to make sure im happy with all of this before i go in if i can.
