Goodbye Nanny McPhee
Let me start again! (I think I posted on the wrong board )
I'm 38, new to the site, but have been following the ups and downs of everyone's great brace adventures whilst awaiting for my own to start.
To date, I have had one extraction and am trying to steady my nerves ready for the following two removals which are taking place next week (all pre-molars).
I will then be ready (!!??) for fixed upper and lower metal braces to correct the over crowding on top and bottom. I'm not really too concerned about having braces, I've waited so long to get it done on the NHS I am just very grateful that my smile is being fixed.
Thanks again everyone for putting my mind at ease with all your stories and advise on this amazing site. It's reassured me that I am about to start a long but very worthwhile journey x

Goodbye Nanny McPhee - hello Gummy Bear!
Thanks so much for the welcome! The extractions are done so there is no backing out now! Still can't believe I'm actually getting braces - I start thinking about it and get a fluttery feeling of nerves and excitement.
Soooo glad the extractions are done. Am I just kidding myself when I think that thats the worst part over?? Just the idea of having bones yanked out of my jaw had me in a bit of a state, but actually the thought was worse than the reality, which always tends to be the case. I'm not sore or suffering with dry socket or anything so - so far so good!! Eating is especially interesting though - I'm gnawing my food with front teeth like a hamster as I'm worried about chewing using my back teeth in case my "gaps" hurt. I'm still sitting at the dinner table giving it my best shot long after everyone else has finished and cleared up! Suppose this is how it will be for a while yet once my grid is fully furnished with metal!
My brackets are going on in two days time, then its a week of waiting before the wires go in. Once this is done I will post my first pictures to show my smile as it is now. (No idea how to do this though so will enlist the help of kind and patient hubby).
By the way, can anyone tell me if the brackets and wires are fixed onto the backs of the teeth too?
Ta Ta For Now x

Thank you so much Ken! Yes today was the big B-Day!
Youre so right - the brackets do feel "spikey" and a bit hurty against the inside of my cheek, so I'm so glad you said that it will feel smoother once the wires in!
My reaction when I saw my teeth for the first time in the mirror was "OHMYGOD!!" It must have been a nervous thing as I had a major fit of the giggles! My family so far have been very tactfull and are pretending that the gigantic slabs of metal in my mouth are not in fact that noticeable! Bless 'em.
Anyhoo, so far so good (apart from the naughty little sore that is beginning to develope inside my cheek). I am off for a salt water gargle now - yummy - and will get some photos on asap.

Oh thanks Ken!
Yes I've got the little bands on, so I think that I'll just have to grin and bare the spikey feeling for the week until the wire goes on. Can't WAIT for that to come round!
You are soo right, I'm really looking forward to my teeth moving to their new homes as you so rightly say - that made me laugh!
Your reassurance is appreciated.

Woke up this morning to find my six year old staring at me holding his teddy. He told me that his teddy was scared of my braces but he bravely (but not very convincingly) said that he didn't find me scarey at all! Thanks for that! Out of the mouths of babes eh?!

OOh it's weird! My wire's have been on three days now and my teeth feel all insecure! Half of me wants to wiggle them with my tongue and half of me is terrified and feeling ever so slightly sick by it! Weird Weird Weird!

Well it's been just over the three week mark now and I'm a teeny bit worried. I thought I was going to be in pain and especially went and bought protein shakes in case I couldn't chew normal food. But I don't really have a problem - I just cut everything up tiny with a knife and fork and take hours to eat! The reason I'm worried is that apart from not feeling pain, only pressure, I don't see anything at all happening with the old toothy pegs. Even the ones which are obviously out of alignment and cross over aren't really sore. I thought that these points of pressure would be the most painful as the wire has to "stretch over" them to pull into shape. Is it possible that my wire is not tight enough do you think? Does anyone else have it realitively easy like me, and therefor are worried that nothing is actually happening????

You have that "wiggly feeling" so something is definitely happening!!! Don't worry. Some people do not see drastic movement right away.
Like me, you may wake up one morning and realize that they have moved overnight! My teeth changed but I didn't see the drastic changes until I started elastics. Then HOLY COW did my teeth move fast!!!
Have faith! They WILL move!

Thanx Bekah! I hope that "HOLY COW" moment comes along soon, but youre right, I suppose I just have to trust that the mystical magical wire is doing its thing and that one day I will see a little change! Even a teeny one will be welcome! You've made me feel a bit more optimistic!
