Hey everyone,
My surgery wasn't cancelled, but I didn't have the energy to post about it until today. I'll try to be detailed since it's the beginning of the month.
I wasn't nervous at all going in, which is good, because I thought I'd have a panic attack before getting anesthesia. But it was really smooth. They first gave me some bitter numbing substance to snort up my nose, and it was so disgusting that it kept my mind busy. They found a vein, then put me to sleep though a mask. I was amazed how fast the whole process was, and how fact the doctors were moving. They're no bank tellers.
I think I was told my surgery took 7 hours. I woke up in the recovery room, still sleepy, and stayed there for another 4 hours. In my room, I was still in a haze, and feeling completely weak and thirsty (but I couldn't drink, of course). My first day consisted of sleeping and feeling horrible. I normally can handle pain and discomfort, but this was pretty intense. I turned into a total wimp.
I stayed at the hospital 2 nights. My second day was just as awful, but on my third day I already felt much better. I forced myself to eat and walk, and I felt more than ready to go home.
The first few days at home were pretty hard. At the hospital, you get your meds through IV, and you have a morphine pump. At home, you have to take either liquid or solid medication once you can swallow. Be prepared for the kids medication to taste like a 100x sweeter than baklava chemical paste. I chose the pill medication, and had it crushed until I could swallow on day 5.
Also, you'll probably be dependent to some extend, and if you're like me, you'll be feeling grumpy and have the attitude and facial appearance of a big baby. My mom was there for me during the whole process, and she helped me a lot. This whole experience would have been 1000 times more difficult without her.
Right now, I'm already doing much better, while my face still feels like a water ballon that's being punched non-stop. I can't close my mouth yet so droolling is my main pastime. Have lots of towels around...

Well, i've been reading everyone elses blogs and taking their experiences into account. I have a pretty good idea of what to expect. The things i'm nervous about are any extremes in residual effects (numbess, swelling, loss of weight, infection, etc). Also, anhesthesia freaks me out. I work in the medical field so that really doesn't help believe it or not, just makes you more aware of what could possibly happen. I guess the saying "ignorance is bliss" would be best for this situation. I know everything will go fine, I just worry about that possible .0000001%.
Other than that ive been getting things together I know will taste good after being blended into a nice milkshake consistancy. My surgeon had some left over Zip-n-squeezes and gave me some. I have some assorted syringes and suction to help clear secretations and take meds as I'm going to be wired for a week He said the pain won't be bad at all since the numbness will help take care of that, and typically goes away before most of the numbness is gone.
I thought i'd be more nervous, but i'm more anxious/excited. I think it'll hit me the night before.
How about you?

I'm getting excited/nervous too. My surgery isn't until the 28th though. It's in a different province, so I'm going to have to fly first then go shopping for the things I need. I'm going to be getting lots of ice cream and nutrition shakes. I'm only having a sliding genioplasty done - a lot less of a deal than a lot of people posting on this forum, but I find reading the forum really helpful still.
I'm nervous about the one-offs too, like numbness, swelling, etc. But I have to trust my surgeon. All in all - I can't wait.

What province are you in? I'm in BC. I just had my final pre op appt and impressions done today. I'm so nervous it's difficult to sleep. Maybe I'll need to take the Ativan early!anna1222 wrote:I'm getting excited/nervous too. My surgery isn't until the 28th though. So here i am, sitting in my hospital bed, less than 24 hours post-op. Surgery went VERY well, all was finished in a about 3 hours. Impcted my maxilla about 6mm, and advanced my mandible about 6mm, and 4 in my chin.
So they started the IV in pre-op, gave me ome Versed to chill out a bit, and reviewed my case with the various docs. They rolled me over to the OR, when they asked me a few different questions. They told me they were now going to push te propol to knock me out, and the next thing I knew I was waking up.
I was in a great deal of pain when I woke up, and all i could remembe them telling me wss to push my button for pain control. Also, they were giving me extra. The pain was at a 10 then evntualyl dropped to a 3 by the time I was rolled out of recovery. I was in there for longer than expeted since my, BP went a little too low in the OR, so they pushed something to bring it up, but now it wouldnt come down in post-op.
After they rolled me ov to my room a few hours later, I was starting to get VERY nauseous. I had quite abit of blood drippin into my stomach, causing allll kinds of nausea. I much have vomited about 5 times, just blood and fluid. NOT fun. Wit thet, they gave me a mix of Zofran, Compazine an Scopalimine. The combo took care of the nausea and vomiting after a few hours.
The foley was hottible. The took it out in my room, but I was having trouble urinating afterward, so they hadto straight cath me once to help me empty my bladder.
So after pain med, ant-emetics and steroids, my OS said I look good eough to go home around 12.
I cant wait for the first week to be over with as I know its the worst.
