Hi, new here with a question about extraction pain

#1 Post by javamama »

Hello, I just got 4 Bicuspids extracted on Monday(2 top, 2 bottom) and had my wire put it right after my extraction. Its been 5 days since the extraction and I am still in a lot of pain in one of my extraction sites. Its my upper left that is throbbing when I touch it, or bite down, the rest seem to be healing fine. I went back to my Dentist yesterday and had it checked out, the assistant looked at it and said they all look fine, and that the reason it might not be healing well is because my wire is on and tugging at the teeth making it more uncomfortable. Can this happen? I keep thinking I have a dry socket, but she didn't say anything about that when she saw me. I feel horrible though, and feel like my pain should have actually lessened after 5 days. Should I ask them to take the wire off for a couple days to see if it heals better? I'm taking 800mg every 4 hours and it still is barely helping my pain. I have Vicodin but it makes me very sick when I take it and doesn't do anything for my pain. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

It is possible the pressure from the wire is a contributing factor to the pain you are experiencing, so it wouldn't hurt to ask to get your wire removed.

I also had a lot of pain while healing from getting my 4 bicuspids removed. (I did not have braces on at the time). I think we are just the unlucky ones as most stores I've read here on the board say that getting bicuspids removed is no big deal. Like you I had throbbing pain. Like you I could not take opiates and, like you, Advil did very little. I went back to the oral surgeon thinking I had dry socket, but did not. Sorry, I have little advice. Only sympathy. I think my pain finally subsided after a couple weeks, so hang in there.

I had 2 baby molars pulled on Tuesday and got braced Thursday. My ortho said that the areas where I got the teeth pulled would probably be extra sore because I had the braces put on before they were fully healed and she wants to start moving them- so that is probably causing you the extra pain- hope you start feeling better soon!

Thanks for the replies, its nice to know I'm not the only one who had a lot of pain from bicuspid extractions. Everyone told me it would be no big deal, but it was horrible! I'm hanging in there, they prescribed me Tylenol with Codeine to take since I couldn't take Vicodin, but that did nothing for the pain even after taking 2, so I'm just continuing with the Ibuprofen and putting Oragel on the gum surrounding the extraction site. It doesn't help that my mouth is covered in blisters, oh the joys! Hopefully this will all be worth it in a couple years.

Oh and as far as getting my wire removed, I went to my Ortho yesterday who said it wasnt necessary. He said that I am having alot of movement on my tooth that is right behind the one that is extracted and it is actually a tiny bit wobbly. He said it is just working to close the gap. If Im still in severe pain by tonight I might try taking half a vicodin to see if it helps.
