Retainer Impressions

#1 Post by epj0819 »

So I was finally debanded yesterday, which was amazing and only slightly painful. I love my teeth, but I am parnoid that I moved or something when they took my retainer impressions. I'm also worried because I flossed last night for the 1st time after getting them off and I noticed a gap already opening between my front top teeth. I know that there was contact between these teeth when I had the braces on, but what if I didn't notice this space and the retainer is off? I'm so glad that my ortho agreed to rush my retainer (I'm going out of town), so I only have to wait a day, rather than a week. I know I'll be nervous until I get it. Any thoughts? Any experience with worry about retainer molds?

I'm sure the person taking your moulds would have noticed if you had moved enough to cause problems. Your ortho will check that your retainers fit properly before sending you away with them. I was worried about gaps opening up after braces but before receiving my retainers (lucky me, I only had to wait 2 hours), and my ortho said that even if that happened, he could sort the problem by adjusting the retainers.

Good luck! :D

Hi epj0819,
I also had my braces removed yesterday! It feels strange without them. When I saw my teeth minus braces I immediately thought that they don't look real - they are too straight :) Anyway I was fitted with essix retainers 2 hours after debanding. But when I got home last night I took them off and had a good look at my teeth. I noticed some imperfections that I hadn't notice with the braces on and wondered if the teeth had moved already or if they were always like that and I just hadn't noticed it before.
I wouldn't worry too much about slight movement. Retainers (even essix) can be used to correct slight movement if that has happened. Good luck to you and enjoy your new teeth!
Tony
