As with everything braces related.. usually the pain and discomfort goes away. I don't have a tpa but from what I'd read here is that you get used to it.

Oh Music lady--I totally hear you!! The pain and soreness lasts about 2 weeks. I had gotten mine in October (a nance TPA) The TPA is the wire across the upper back part of your mouth, and the nance part is more in front and had a little acrylic piece on the roof of your mouth. After 2 weeks you get used to it and so does your tongue. I had my nance piece removed after 3 months--the TPA alone was a breeze after that! Just got my TPA wire moved 3 weeks ago after a total of 9months......I was happy to have it out, but hardly noticed a difference in eating or talking after 9months.....good luck!

I just got my pendulum in and my tongue is in pieces from it. I won't pretend it's a TPA, but here's what I've done!

Motrin and orajel (be careful not to overdose). Cold water helps the tongue too, but I won't lie - it's not pretty.

Eat....soup, with crackers. I also would take an english muffin and really lightly toast it, with butter, and then sop that up with soup and just swallow it, or barely chew.

Shakes/smoothies, I do will with Jack in the Box Hearty Breakfast bowls, but they're really high calories.

Good luck!!

Thanks guys. It just helps to know others who have been there, done that, and lived to tell about it. :)
