since getting all metal braces...most frequently asked ?

#1 Post by sadpanda »

When people see my braces, first they ask why I got them and then after that, they ALWAYS ask why I didn't get Invisalign, especially when they realize my age. I know the above question has been asked on the board, but I'm actually asking what are the first things people ask you when they notice your braces?

As for the Invisalign thing...I didn't want Invisalign. But actually, when I went for my ortho consults, they said my bite and jaw problems were too severe to be corrected by Invisalign and that I wasn't a candidate for it, so I couldn't have done it anyway.

First questions were always "WHY? Your teeth are already straight!"Next question was usually "How long you gotta have those things on?"

Nobody has actually had the nerve to ask me how much they cost, surprisngly. Once or twice I was asked why I didn't get Invisalign, and I told them "Too expensive, and it probably wouldn't work for my problems, anyway."

A lot of people are jealous. Not everyone can afford braces.

And not everyone has the guts or willing to put in the effort to get braces as an adult.

Quoting for truth... my husband is one of them. His parents put all the orthodontic attention on his sister (who does have lovely teeth) and since he didn't really care one way or another, he has one extremely wonky front tooth with a baby tooth embedded in the roof of his mouth that he now refuses to seek treatment for. He says it doesn't bother him, but I suspect some days he'd like to have nice aligned teeth!

I was asked why would I decide now, at my age, to get them. "You've lived with them crooked this long why now?"

I have been asked about the Invisilign. I'm not a candidate for that since I have a nasty crossbite.

Why didn't I get ceramic, or clear braces..

"Why have you bothered, your teeth weren't that bad were they?"

It's interesting, i'm not doing it because i want other people to notice my perfect teeth, I just want to be able to smile freely and not be self conscious about showing my wonky teeth. It's about self confidence for me not about what other people think which people think is strange because i'm a really outgoing confident person about most things.

Either that or people often admit:

"I'm really jealous!"
Braced for 19 months 2 weeks and 2 days.

I always get asked about Invisalign too, but I really didn't want them either. The thought of being able to just remove something was not for me! (Especially after some of the pain I have endured I would've surely taken them out one too many times!!)

I have gotten asked cost a few times but always discretely and I do get the occassional "Why did you get them, I would never do that" type comments to which I always say... "We all have different priorities and not everyone's are straight teeth!" hahaha!!

i do have some ceramic brackets, but I HATE HATE HATE the questions about "why not Invisalign" and "ohhhhh jeez, how long until you get them off?" the other one of course is "i thought your smile was fine before" (that one is the toughest because most people mean it sweetly and sincerely but it REALLY doesn't help ya!)

"braces are beautiful" icon reminds me that I want a t-shirt that says "braces are for everyone, invisalign is for almost no one" I'd say 90% of people i know with invisalign already had braces and need minor adjustment.

I know this feeling exactly!!!! People say my smile was fine before, but I think they just think it's a nice thing to say.

I think people are surprised at braces as adults, b/c they want to know why you didn't get them earlier, and why you waited so long.

And, I get a lot of "you didn't need them". But, the funny thing is, when I see others w/braces, even if i know darned well they needed them, I say the same thing "you didn't need them".. mostly to get them to explain why they were getting them w/o sounding too blunt and forward.

I have been asked "I bet that hurts doesn't it?", "How much is that costing you?", "How much longer do you have?", "Why didn't you get them clear or Invisalign?", and of course the statement "Your teeth weren't that bad before".
