Retainer on, but bite still off - normal?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Retainer on, but bite still off - normal?

#1 Post by KatherineJ »

Hi all,

I got debraced on July 16 and got my retainer put in that day. My bite has been off since getting the braces last summer (Aug 2009). My top front teeth are even-steven with my bottom teeth so I can't close my teeth together properly. My Ortho has done two adjustments on the retainer and and my teeth are still out of alignment.
Is this normal? Does the retainer make the bite right after some time? Is this how it's suposed to be? I can't stand it. My teeth scrape when I talk and when I try to eat.
I'm miserable.

Call the office and schedule an appointment to discuss your concerns. Your bite should not be like that.

A new retainer is being made for me. I'm being switched from a Hawley to an essix.
I only had braces on my top teeth and this is causing a little complication. My lower teeth are straight, but a couple stick out enough to thro my yop teeth out.

Thank you for your help.
