Private Ortho in London who works with NHS surgeon(s) ???

#1 Post by rektik »

Hi all,

I've got a class 3 underbite and have the option of taking ortho treatment and oral surgery with the NHS. But I am going to need greater flexibility in what the NHS provides (i.e. changing of appointments to fit more preferred times etc.) and also I want to get the clear brackets! (I'm 23)

Anyway so now I'm looking for a private orthodontist to treat me (of which I am obviously going to pay for) however I can no where near afford, and do not want to pay for the surgery. I have heard of cases before where private orthodontists work with NHS surgeons (who are friends for example) and together they can work to achieve the results needed. With the major thing being the op is done on the NHS. (Mostly in northern england on this message board!)

I'm looking for a private ortho in London or surrounding areas who can help me with this. If anyone knows and can recommend me one who can help me with this situation I would be most grateful. I personally can't see how it would be too difficult but then again I don't work in the industry so who knows!!

Thanks.

Hi

I have different problems to you but i am mixing treatment on nhs and private.

I could if i wanted to have the entire lot done through the nhs but i dont want to wait and i definately prefer the ceramic braces.

I first visited hospital to see the Ortho who then told me i needed to see the oral surgeon, they both work in the same hospital and both do private and nhs so i am having braces done privately but surgery on nhs and they both work together a lot.

I was quite surprised how easy it was to get what i wanted i dont know if i was just lucky but i thought it was the norm actually.

Best thing to do is do some work on-line find your nearest hospital that has a Max surgeon then look at the consultant OD and google them to find out where they work privately.

I am in S East (Essex).

I also went down this route, the only thing of importance is has an NHS orthodontist definitely told you you are eligible for orthodontics on the NHS as not all people are when over 18, only those with a strong medical case.

My dentist referred me to a private orthodontist and after paying my private consultation fee, he was the one who recommended me to the NHS ortho as he believed my case could be completely carried out on the NHS so he obviously wasn't the money grabbing sort. I was eligible but at the time the waiting list for braces was too long so I decided to pay private to start immediately. The cost for this was £3500 (although I paid a bit extra for ceramic brackets) and this was the same price for braces only (ie with, or without surgery), as only orthodontics are considered a cosmetic procedure, all surgerys are done on the NHS in an NHS hospital. The only difference is the private ortho can choose which surgeon he prefers to work with and so instead of having my maxfac appointments in my nearest hospital I had to travel to a different town as that is where his preferred surgeon was based.

My case is a bit boggling though as I later left my private ortho and finished my orthodontics on the NHS and had surgery in my local hospital instead. This baffed the NHS orthos as most of them had not worked with/hated ceramic brackets

Both your answers are basically exactly what I want. Do all NHS orthos (or most) work privately also? Because I think my best bet on getting the ceramic braces and NHS surgery is to go private with the NHS ortho I'm currently seeing, who will in turn work with the NHS surgeon (through the NHS).

My case is not at all cosmetic, I've already been diagnosed as a moderate class 3 patient, and suffer from constant headaches every morning from my teeth trying to meet when I eat all day (basically grinding).

It kind of sounds vein I guess wanting ti have the ceramic braces, but I work in consultancy and feel it would be far less traumatic for me. My next appointment is on Friday... praying I can get somewhere with this! Even if I have to pay, I really don't care. One thing I do know is however, I will not be able to afford the surgery!! :D
