Fully braced (yay!) but struggling with molar build-ups

#1 Post by .melski. »

I got braced today - ended up with Inspire Ice uppers and metal lowers - and I have to say, the brackets/braces themselves are fine. I'm anticipating them being a little tender tomorrow but at the moment not bothering me at all and I feel like I'm adapting quickly to having the hardware in my mouth!

But I've got a pretty big overbite and my ortho was worried that I'd be biting down on my front lowers, so she's made a molar build-up thing on either side. I didn't know they did things like that and they are the worst! Basically I no longer have any teeth that touch for chewing and it's really demoralising. Anyone have any tips for coping with this? I'm just hoping I don't have to have them for long :(

I have the molar buildups because my I-teeth need to be pulled forward and because they are behind my bottom teeth my ortho put those on..

At first it is weird.. Give it a couple of weeks and you will be fine.. It is hard biting somethings (sliced dill pickles for one; they slip right through the gap).. I just make a joke out of it and keep on going. LOL!!

As soon as my I-teeth are pulled forward they come off. He told me to expect at least 3-4 months.. Still got a ways to go..

Good Luck!!!

I can tell you from experience, that molar build-ups, like everything with braces, take some getting used to, and as soon as your used to it, you will forget you have them. Once I got my molar buildups off, that was weird, I was biting my toungue more then when i first had them put on!

I had these. After about a week you will be used to them and you will relearn how to chew food.

I had the molar buildups for 7 weeks and just got mine off last week. It did take about a week or 2 to get used to them. To take them off, all the hygeinist did was take a pair of "pliers" and break them off of my teeth. I guess they're made out of plaster.

i have build -ups for a month now and i got used to them...it's just that i eat slower and i'm less efficient in chewing..
i had 4 extractions and my lower molars are leaned to my tongue, thats why my ortho needed this..

I've had my braces for 2 weeks tomorrow and I'm used to my molar build ups.

I think I need to go back and have mine built up more, though, since my front top tooth is starting to hit my bottom front bracket again when I chew now that things have started moving around.

believe it or not, you WILL get used and will master eating with them. I did. Certainly, never managed to eat 100% normal (salad was a pain, for example) bu most of the time I would eat just fine with the buildups. It takes a bit, true, but as most of the braces-related stuff, you end up forgetting you have them on.
