Yes, finally decided to get braces!

#1 Post by Dilema »

I am 27 years old, I had crooked teeth for probably the last 10 years or so. It really killed a lot of my confidence, I haven't smiled around people for more than 10 years! I've consulted a orthodontist about 6 years, but for some reason did not go further. I've never had my parents push me to fix my teeth, even tho they care a lot about me. I personally would never let my kid go the way I did. Well, today is my 2nd day...I am not in anyway different with braces on, like I said I did not smile in front of people in 10 years....Will post my pics after my first adjustment....good luck to everyone! :P

Hi Dilema :D

Congrats to you on "taking the plunge". It's very empowering to finally make the decision to start this amazing journey. I hope you're adjusting well to all the new hardware. It usually doesn't take too long for most people. Soon you'll forget what your teeth felt like before braces. As you begin to see the changes in your teeth, you'll find yourself smiling more and more. You will feel proud to show them off - braces and all!

Lots of luck with your treatment. Feel free to share your photos...

Mike

Hello!

As far as not smiling in front of people, I can't bring myself to show my teeth either. I haven't since middle school. I'm nervous about how I'll look but at the same time I keep reminding myself there's really no way it can look any worse than it looks now! Things can only get better from here. :)

Congrats!

Count me in for the no smiling/no confidence either. I'm hoping to get braced in 2011 after having other work done first. I wish I would have at least gone to an ortho in my twenties to see what it would cost and how long. I'm 30 now. I thought I could never afford it but in reality, I always could have. Just needed to spend less and get my priorities in order.

I don't know why my mother or other family members never pushed or even talked with me about getting my teeth fixed either...I would never let a family member go with teeth like mine for so long

I totally understand the no smiling/no confidence thing. I don't think people can really understand the importance of straight teeth unless they don't have it. I've always been the kind of girl that people say "you're pretty but..you need to smile more". I just never smiled in pictures and tried not to smile to much outside of my house because I was so embarrased of my teeth. About a year ago I decided to start smiling with my teeth in pictures and see what happened. I look back at those pictures and see a girl smiling with her teeth buy frowing with her eyes. So, I decided that I won't have the slightest bit of confidence until I fix that problem. So all I can say to you is congrats on beggining this journey :) Ive only had mine on for 4 days and am struggling with confidence but I know that in the long run, I'm gonna benefit from this.

So keep your chin up and add some extra bounce in your steps because you're taking this time to take care of yourself :)

Good luck!
