47 - am I the oldest??
Hi everyone - I'm new as of today; I already posted but it looks like I posted in the wrong place. So, I'll just post again!
I'm 47 and finally decided to fix the teeth. I'm the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to my mouth!!
I've had 4 extractions and now have 6 brackets on the molars and 4 spacers inbetween. On Wednesday I will get fully wired! I've had a very tough time dealing with the pain, but today I find that the metal isn't bothering me too much. I've used a ton of wax over the last week! I'm not getting a lot of support from my family, as this is costing me more than I can afford... and because I am the cook of the household, not much is being cooked right now!! Anyone have any suggestions for the big day? Anything important I should ask or be aware of? I'm so glad you all are here for support! I have been off work for the summer and hoped to have the whole process done by the time I go back to work, but it just didn't work out that way - I go back on Tuesday!

Welcome to the group. Be prepared to have a lot of nice soft food to eat over the course of the next few days. It's only been a few days for me and I still can't eat solid food. Don't be afraid to take some ibuprofen and keep it steady within your system to help take the edge of the pain if you do end up having it.

No, you are definitly not the oldest, I'm 56. I've had my braces on since mid-May, and I promise, it does get easier. I'm eating so many more things than I was that first month. I still use wax on a couple of spots most days, but not always. Just when one spot gets better, my teeth move a little, and a new spot starts to rub, but I figure movement must be a good thing, right?
48 here!!!
Hahaha....perhaps someone else will start cooking, unless they like mashed potatoes, bananas, avocados and yogurt...A LOT! Same in our household...I don't feel like cooking things I can't eat....I know it sounds gross, but I put a little of whatever we are eating in a blender or food processor...it tastes the same.
Good luck!

...and another older patient here. I'm 57 (for a few more months!). I had mine put on in August. I still find chewing a lot of things to be painful, but it's been much better this month than last. I sometimes forget that I have them when talking (I thought that day would never come). But I must say, I'm already sick of brushing!
I am really looking forward to straight teeth. I just know it won't be an easy trip to get there. I figured the 18 months would pass quickly anyway, so I might as well get my teeth straightened!
Good luck to all of you!

Good to hear from some other "relics..." I just had my 8 week adjustment (first one) on Wed. and again, the pain persists, and is in different places now. I have one really crooked tooth on the bottom that was given a bracket but was left out of the wire game until now. Somehow, she got the wire into one side of it, and man, is it mad!! Every tooth is SO sore and they feel like they're just gonna fall out. My uppers feel like they're pushing their way out of my face! I thought they were suppose to move to the sides, to fill in the holes I have due to extractions! And of course, the bite plate remains... I BEGGED them to take it out, but no such luck yet. This is quite a roller coaster ride....

Hi - I'm 53 & have had my upper linguals on for 5 weeks now - I can't chew as I just feel my teeth sort of bouncing on the wires!! Also it seems to take me AGES to eat anything (the up side is I've lost a bit of weight!!).
Fortunately, no extractions - just some "slenderising" to be done.
The food is a bit of a problem - home is fine - but when we go out it takes a bit more thinking about, eating a sandwich with a knife & fork, odd, but it worked!! Otherwise it's choosing "squidgeable" food off of the menu!!
Puddings are good though - treacle sponge & custard mmmmmm!!!
