Bumps on Jaw Bone after Jaw Surgery

I have weird looking bumps on the sides at the moment. They should be bumps on my jaw bone. My surgeon told me this is normal because he "pasted" my jaw bone on top of the remaining bone at the back after he removed part of my lower jaw bone.

Do you have this problem too? This is scary and I hope it goes away within 6 months or so as my surgeon promised. I wouldn't want to live with this forever.

Hmmm. That is quite a bump. Is it on both sides? Most people have BSSO 's and I don't think there's any pasting together in that procedure. Did you have an IVRO or a different type of lower procedure?

If the surgeon spoke confidently that it will resolve I'd have to trust him/her.

By the way, your profile is spectacular. Congrats!!

I`ve never heard of this one, but there are several techniques to accentuate the jaw bone like that (even implants), so I guess it was intentional.
it does look a little pointy though, but I would believe his claim that this degrades with time for now, because the same claims are obviously true for noticable edges caused by sliding genioplastys and such.

I'm nearly five weeks post op and I have slight bumps either side of my jaw where they cut so its not out of the ordinary but I guess yours is quite prominent. If I strain my neck out you can see my bumps too. The surgeon told me its normal too its where I still have gaps until the bones heal together again. All fun and games in the world of post-op jaw surgery patients eh?

I have no plates on my lower jaw. My surgeon did a surgery technique with the word "vertical" in it. I am not sure what it is called exactly.

What I do know is he cut a portion of my lower jaw off from the back of the lower jaw bone, near the joint and behind the nerves. The remaining bone in front was pasted on top of the bone left behind, so that explains the bump.

I don't know how it will flatten out in a couple of months but I sure hope it does.

It sounds like you had an IVRO, aka "Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy". Just curious, do you have any numbness on your chin or lower lip?
Uppers braced April 15, 2010.
Wisdom teeth extracted April 30, 2010.
Lowers braced May 12, 2010.
BSSO & 3-piece LeFort I April 22, 2011.
Braces off July 3, 2012!!

I've got a bit of numbness on my chin but it does not affect me a lot.

The area that affects me the most is the area above my upper lip. It makes it difficult for me to smile and it generally feels "rubbery" in that area when I speak. What's worse, my upper lip seems to be making odd shapes when I try to smile.

The sides of my face also feel numb and swollen. The right side is worse for me and I often feel like there is a bump on that side.

I had a bit of a bump but not like yours- your bump is very pointy and really sticks out a lot.
From the lack of responses I'd say that yours is not the normal outcome and I'd look into it.
Could you get a second opinion from another oral surgeon?
