First full day:

When I woke up, it was really like starting over. My speech had improved greatly throughout the day yesterday, so I didn't think it would be an issue again. However, when I woke up this morning I was back to square one. In some ways my speech was worse than it was right after I was braced. My "f's" and "s's" were very difficult. The more I talked throughout the day, the easier things became. I also took a tip I learned from here - drink plenty of water, all day every day, and talking is easier.

We had a company gathering today, and I had potato salad and a hot dog cut in to small pieces with very little trouble. We then ate ice cream. Tonight I came home and made a grilled cheese sandwich, and dipped it in tomato soup to soften it up, and for some reason my mouth feels swollen like it did yesterday and is very sore now. I took some Tylenol and Ibuprofen, and placed wax on all four corners where the wires come out.

Soreness has been on and off. I wouldn't say I've had "pain" but the soreness has ranged from mild to extreme. Right now I'd say it's definitely moderate, coming down from extreme.

There are times when though I feel them, they don't hurt at all (this of course is when I have pain meds in my system, hehe).

I realized some things throughout my first day -
-Sometimes my mouth makes embarrassing noises when I'm trying to learn how to cover up my teeth with my lips after laughing or opening my mouth wide.
-I gleek when I talk, more than I'd care to admit.
-When I try to put in wax, my mouth creates a lot of saliva and I end up with pools of drool on my shirt. Not very attractive, and makes it so very hard to place the wax.
-It's hard to differentiate with my tongue if something is food in my brace, or just part of the bracket.

That's all I can think of to write about for my first full day now. I will continue to post updates. :)

Okay, I'll bite: What does "gleek" mean? I know what "Gleeks" are (fans of the tv show, "Glee", of which I am one), but what does it mean when one "gleeks"?

Okay, how to describe it... it's like, a waterfall of spit? Like it's not just drooling, but it's like when you're talking and you feel a spray come down over your arms and lap and you know it is your own spit.

Wish I could edit, but maybe a better way to describe instead of a waterfall is really a sprinkler because a waterfall just has falling water and a sprinkler has water which sprays up and out.

Hey Nervous Newbie, I've enjoyed reading your posts. I just got braced Wed. I had the spacers, then the bands put in several weeks ago. Last week I had two teeth pulled and then the big day. It sounds like we're in the same boat - can't touch my teeth together without it hurting, but it's already getting better. I tried to floss on day 1 and didn't get very far. The floss wouldn't even get between most of my teeth. I made sure to take advil before flossing and it helped a lot today. This website offers so much support, it's really helped keep me sane. Looking forward to watching/sharing progress reports.

Hey MdHuskerFan! Thanks for the reply! Yeah, sounds like we are on the same time line - only one day apart! Today I can touch my two front teeth to my bottom two teeth and I feel a weird, uncomfortable pressure sensation but not pain. If I actually put pressure and bite down a bit then I feel pain. Today we went out to eat and I put a piece of bread between the front two and the bottom two to pull, and it was soft bread (a roll) so it worked out okay. I've been mostly using the glue block they put on my molar to chew. They only put one on my right side so it is strange to just use that location of my mouth for chewing.

To be honest I haven't tried to floss yet but I know I really need to get started on a proper routine ASAP! I'm just so sore that I can't really bear the thought of it. :( No excuses though - I really am going to make myself do it tonight though. I just took some Ibuprofen and Tylenol so once those kick in I will make myself go in the bathroom and begin figuring out my routine, even though I'm sure this first time is going to take forever. :)

Once I'm done with that I will come back and post a Day Two update.

Day two update, as promised. :)

Last night before I went to bed I took Tylenol PM's and I slept through the night with no pain at all. I woke up this morning and after a little bit had moderate discomfort so I took some Tylenol and Ibuprofen and began to feel a lot better about 1/2 hour later. I only felt mild discomfort from about 9:00am-6:00pm, and then when the discomfort began to return I just took some more and now it is gone again.

Today I went out with my family to eat and that was a chore in itself, haha. It was the first time my family saw my teeth and they were basically just staring at my mouth the whole time. Geez, guys, way to make me feel self-conscious! The first time I attempt solid foods and you insist on staring at me. Well we went to a buffet (anyone heard of Golden Corral?) and I ate part of a roll, mac 'n' cheese, mashed potatoes, and potato salad, and it was all so yummy! I even cut up a tiny bit of bourbon chicken and was able to chew it on the glue block on my molar, and it was sooo good to eat something "normal". :) I didn't feel any pain but I did feel some tenderness and a lot of pressure. People say you really start to feel your spacers when you use your molars to chew but honestly I still don't feel them at all... I don't even realize they are there. They haven't caused me a bit of soreness or pain or anything since they've been put in.

Tonight I brushed normally for probably the first time. Every time I've brushed I've been so delicate, mostly because of the painful pressure it caused, but since tonight I did not have discomfort I brushed like I normally brush and I feel like I really got my teeth cleaner than I had been. I brushed for several minutes and it felt really good. My colored dots are also gone now, thank goodness! I then swished ACT mouthwash for a little over a minute.

I tried to floss, and it turned out to be an awful nightmare. I'm still pretty discouraged about my inability to floss correctly because I know it is SO important and I am scared of messing up my treatment by not doing it correctly. :( How do you even begin to floss the back teeth!? I have no clue what I'm doing. I want to sit down in front of a mirror and just practice because I can't figure out how to get the floss to go through the teeth where there are no spaces UNDER the archwire. Before, I would just thread it through the top and pull down, but now when I pull down the archwire blocks it from going any further down, so I'm really stumped on what to do. I can't seem to thread it from under the archwire either... like I said, I just really need to practice I guess.

I am excited to use my Waterpik but I kind of want to wait until after my spacers are out because I have a fear that it is so powerful it will knock my spacers loose. I also have a Sonicare toothbrush on the way in the mail to me. The girl was supposed to ship it out like a week and a half ago, and when I asked where it was she got back to me and said she "thought" she shipped it but she never did. *sigh* Hopefully it will get here this week. I probably won't use it until the spacers are out anyhow.

Well that was my uneventful Day Two. Thanks for reading!

Congrats to you! I get braced up tomorrow 9/28 and I am super excited. I tell it and tell it again! I wished I could have gone without these spacers, they are the worst! Best of luck to you!!! I'll be checking on you!

I've been using a waterpik and I love it. Make sure to use warm water. I tried flossing with the hard tipped floss and with a threader for regular floss. I like the hard tipped floss the best but it still takes me a while to get the job done. And the back teeth are just a pain. I end up slobbering and it takes me several tries. But I'm sure it'll get easier for us with practice. Hey, we're managing to survive our first week. Hope you had a nice weekend.

Thanks ChocolateKate and MdHuskerFan.

As far as the drool - YES, every time I try to floss my mouth just pools up! It's quite embarrassing, but thank goodness nobody has seen me do it yet. I tend to pool up at the most inconvenient times. Which is weird, because my mouth is either super dry, OR, it's either too moist! No happy medium! :)

The discomfort has subsided greatly. The majority of the time I don't feel discomfort, just annoying pressure. I do still take 2 Tylenol and 2 Ibuprofen in the morning because I talk for a living, eight hours a day, so I just do it to keep myself comfortable. I don't plan to do it forever, just for now. I still don't feel the spacers at all. I still feel for them to make sure they're there all the time just to make sure they haven't come out.

Tonight I worked a 12 hour shift and my boss bought everyone who stayed late pizza. It was thin crust. I treated myself to two pieces. I did have discomfort while chewing but I took my time and it tasted great. I try to mix more and more solids in to my diet because I try not to baby my teeth too much.

My main issue is STILL the inability to properly floss. I go back to the ortho on Thursday and I'm super worried about being called out on not flossing well, and I'm scared of the adverse side effects it can (and will!) have on my treatment. I've GOT to learn to do it properly.

I'll update again after my Thursday appointment, or before then if something happens!

You will get the hang of flossing. Just go slowly and do the best you can. Explain to your ortho that you are having issues with it and ask the assistant to show you a good technique. :D

I'm writing to talk about my appointment but I did want to mention something which happened this morning. Last night I slept hard on my cheek and when I woke up this morning, my bracket had pressed in to my cheek. I had a crease in my cheek all day from that - it was quite sore! I guess I'm not the first person this has happened to and I'm sure this is not the last time this will happen.

Anyhow...

I had my second appointment today. It was a little more rough than I expected. I had the spacers taken out, but the way they took them out, part of the spacer was still stuck down in there. Then they tried to put on the molar bands, which felt like a disaster, because they tried at least six different sizes before finally getting one that worked. Trying them didn't involve just sliding them over the tooth... they actually pulled them down over the tooth and had me bite down each time to get them situated. The assistant kept getting frustrated and was huffing and sighing and was getting a little rough. She put the spacers back in (ouch!) and called the ortho in to do the bands. He then pulled the spacers back out (another ouch!). He kind of crinkled them to make them fit and had me bite down very hard which doesn't sound that bad but I was already sore after everything else.

Well anyhow it took about 45 minutes for all of this to go on. They still didn't connect my wire to the molar bands, which I thought was the whole purpose of today's appointment. She said she wasn't even certain if they were going to do it next time either. I thought that was all part of moving things along. But what do I know, I'm new at this. I guess they know what they're doing... that's why I pay them the big bucks. :P

No pain right now, but I did take Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I'm hoping all of the worst is over now! I go back in six weeks.

I used my Waterpik for the first time last night! I had it on the lowest setting but then put it up to about the middle when I figured I could handle it, but then it hit my tongue - ow! It wasn't that bad but it was pretty uncomfortable when it hit my tongue. I had my mouth closed but then it fills up with water so fast. I'm still trying to work on my technique, haha. Last night I drenched myself and my walls. Good thing I did it while my boyfriend was at work - he would have thought that was a riot!

All is well right now - I'll keep the thread updated with any changes. Thanks for reading! All comments have been appreciated!

Already have an update, haha...

I learned today that my brackets will never have ligs... they have doors instead, which is strange, but at least they won't stain.

Out of the four molar bands, one of them has hooks on BOTH sides and not just on the part facing the cheek. The one hook faces inside my mouth, toward my tongue, and I keep shredding my tongue on it... well at least I did before I gobbed wax on it. Anyone else have this problem? Why does the one molar band have one hook which faces inward and none of the others do? What's the purpose?

Hi NervousNewbie-

Wow - you've had a lot going on!!

Flossing: What type of floss are you using? I found that I could not use the OralB Superfloss because I could not get the fuzzy part up under my archwire (my wires are close to my teeth, too). I found that the Crest Glide Threader Floss (which is always sold out at my WalMart) is perfect for me. It just has one stiff end you thread between your tooth and the archwire. Yeah, there are still a couple of teeth that take a little more work to get the floss through, but it still works wonders. I suggest you try that one.

WaterPik: Isn't it GREAT?! Have you cleaned either of your eyeballs yet? Or your nostrils? My finger slips off the button often and I end up cleaning everything else but my teeth. I keep mine on level 4, and sometimes have to turn it even lower, depending on my tooth sensitivity.

Sonicare: You're gonna love it. It may feel a bit hard to use at first (meaning hard/sore for your teeth), but you will absolutely get used to it. I love mine!

Molar Bands: Your situation was exactly like mine. Took for-ever to get them in, and biting down on that stick gave me goosebumps. I hate that stuff! My assistant wasn't strong enough to put mine in, so my ortho had to do it, and even HE had a horrible time. I don't think they attached my wires to the bands right away, either. As for the hooks on the inside of your brackets that are cutting up your tongue, ask your ortho if he's going to be using them for anything (attaching elastics, etc.). If he's not, ask if he can remove them, or file them down. I've heard of people doing that and it's worked WONDERS!

Brackets: My lower metal brackets are also self-ligating (meaning they don't have ligs; they have doors). Make sure you check them before you leave the office to make sure they closed all the bracket doors after putting in the wire. I've had doors left open TWICE by them. Fortunately, I figured out how to close them myself.

Brackets/Cheek creases: I have that 24/7. I have permanent indentations on the inside of my lips and cheeks from the brackets. Keeping hydrated helps a little, but I've just accepted that as a part of the process.

Eating out: Good for you!!! It took me a while to get up the confidence to eat out, and even then, I think I ate only pasta with alfredo sauce, so no visible "stuff" in my teeth. In nice restaurants, I still try to stick to less "visible" foods, but otherwise, I eat anything I want. Hamburgers are super messy, and so is spaghetti, so I make sure I have lots of water to swish.

Sorry this is so long... I'm in a talkative mood today. But you sound like you're doing great, and you have a great attitude. Hey - I got my colored ligs!! Check out my story. I love them!

-Cathy
