hydrogen peroxide gargle ?

#1 Post by Theresa48 »

I've started gargling with hydrogen peroxide, diluted 50/50 with water.

The other mouthwashes were eating my lips and making horrible sores in the corners of my mouth...anybody else have this problem? It has taken 2 weeks for my lips to heal...it was like having a horrible sunburn on my lips.

Wondering if anyone else is using H2O2 ? It works great for me. I also have taken to brushing with salt/baking soda occasionally. Some of those toothpastes are way too harsh for me!

im having loads of probs with mouthwash too, it makes all the skin in my mouth peel, gums, inside cheeks and lips. then after a week of thinking my mouth would 'toughen up' i got all sores on my gums. so havent been doing it and now my mouth is ok. have just bought some mild floride mouthwash today so am gonna try that. ive had the same reaction with different toothpastes in the past. i think they're all just too stong...they burn after about 2 secs and your suppose to keep it in your mouth for 30 seconds! no way! :)

I have also had the peeling in my mouth, which is disgusting. Toothpaste is the worst for me. I used the peroxide rinse for a while and really liked it. I tried the crest mouthwash but not liking it too much. Listerine just came out with an alchohol free version, so i'm thinking of trying that too. But am very worried about staining.

@ poppy-- your mouth won't toughen up! It gets worse and worse and takes forever to clear up! I think I am sticking to the 50/50 peroxide/water gargle during the day, and maybe using ACT at night for floride. Geez, you'd think we'd hear more of these kinds of reactions! My mouth has looked like I have a disease !!! It's bad enough I have braces, I don't need something else bringing attention to my mouth!

I have been using Act Total which doesn't contain any alcohol and I really like that it doesn't burn my mouth at all and leaves it minty fresh!

I used to use a peroxide rinse too, but my regular dentist said I should stop using it on a daily basis. Peroxide can whiten teeth, which means I could wind up with whiter teeth that have darker squares where my brackets used to be.

I do use a baking soda/peroxide toothpaste, and I'm told that's fine.

I've had problems for years with burning from both mouthwashes and toothpaste. I switched a couple of years ago to SLS free toothpaste and mouthwash and I find it makes a big difference. SLS is sodium laurel sulfate and has been implicated in the formation of canker sores. It's not actually easy to find the SLS-free toothpaste (Tom's of Maine makes one, otherwise I've ordered it on-line). Biotene makes a really soothing mouthwash which is actually designed for people who have problems with dry mouth. It doesn't have alcohol or SLS and it really does make your mouth feel better.
