Hello. New Here.
Hi There,
I'm new here. I'm 19 and in the UK, not in braces yet but I thought I would join because I'll be having them in the coming months and I've learned a lot here. I keep coming back and I hate being a lurker.
To cut a long story short, I saw a dentist up until I was about ten, when it went private and we had to leave. Since then, I've seen a dentist just the one time at about 14 when I freaked out having moulds taken (I gag so easily) and decided never to go back. There were other reasons why I wasn't up for braces at the time. Mostly, I was too scared.
Anyway, years later and with a new non-private practice just opened in the area, I've had a dentist again for a few weeks. I've tried to put a pic of my teeth in here. It's a bit small- I had to take it on my phone- but you don't want to see it any bigger anyway. They're not pretty. My biggest problems are an extra tooth which grew out of my gum on the bottom and extra teeth on top, serious overlaps. I'm going to need extractions before the braces can go on so it's going to be a long ride.
My main apprehension is anything involving the roof of my mouth. Moulds are a nightmare for me and I could never wear the retainer which has a plate. I'm working on that though and just try to relax and remind myself it will all be worth it. My sister's getting married in just over two years and I'm her maid of honour so I want to look nice on the photos. My Mum's also having her teeth sorted for the wedding, so we're supporting each other through appointments.
Other than that, I'm veggie and a creative writing student; hence my nickname. I'm also interested in languages, especially German, which is also part of my degree studies.

Hi Chrystal,
Thank you. Good look to you too. I've been to your blog and I'll be following it. Your posts about your consultations were very interesting. I'm also an animal lover. My pets have their own webpages on websites that are like Facebook for cats and dogs.
I might start blogging when my treatment gets underway. My next visit is November 8th but that's just to figure out a treatment plan.

Thanks Fleur. I can't wait because my teeth are hurting like hell right now and I've no idea why. They've never hurt before. It only started when I got my new dentist and made an appointment so I think it's at least partly psychosomatic. I've been reading lots of people's blogs and am getting a bit impatient now, even though it could be months.
Nice to meet you.

Don't worry, if I do blog, mine will be loooong posts too. I'm incapable of keeping it short, hence why I don't Twitter. And for me, cutting corners is not an option. No 'gr8' for me! I'm looking forward to the 8th now but also terrified about what they might say. I don't know if they have an ortho on the team or where they might refer me to if they don't. If I can't have braces, I'll be really upset
The cost is worrying me too. Are you using the NHS?
I'll make sure and check in to see how your spaces are doing. Good luck for the 10th. I got it into my head that my appointment was the 10th, so I was really happy to find it was two days earlier. I always have more issues with my gag reflex in the mornings and it's a morning slot so I'll have to be up early to get it under control.
Looking forward to your next update,

You don't have to be referred by your Dentist, especially if you are paying... although it might be good if your Dentist knows of a good Ortho near by and can recommend one. I went and had a consultation with an Ortho my Dentist recommended (my Dentist is NHS) but it didn't go too well. I then went and had a consult with another Ortho, I found him on the internet myself. If you know anyone local who has had Orthodontic treatment, maybe you could ask them if they can recommend anyone. If not there is a search facility on the British Orthodontic Society website (http://www.bos.org.uk/orthodonticsandyou/findortho just scroll down and click Yes) where you can search for Orthos in your area.aveggiewriter wrote:

I am paying privately for my treatment (£2770). There is a new rating system for being able to get braces on the NHS and it's quite strict (I was meant to have a brace 10 years ago on the NHS, before the rules changed). You can view the requirements here http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/orthodonti ... ction.aspx. You basically have to have a very severe case to be referred for a brace on the NHS, even if under 18, nowadays.
Thank you and I am the same, my gag reflex is awful in the mornings ... I do have quite a bad gag reflex, but I did well with the impressions!aveggiewriter wrote: I'll make sure and check in to see how your spaces are doing. Good luck for the 10th. Thanks, Fleur. I'm pretty pleased that they're white too. Two of my front teeth have some staining, these tiny brown lines that I just can't shift. The dentist should be able to sort them though. Other than that, they're white and considering I drink almost nothing but tea and always have done, I'm pleased with that. When I was little, I had some teeth painted with some protective cover because I was struggling to keep my weight up so was put on all kinds of sugary supplements.fleur26 wrote:nice to taking pics to keep progress im sure your teeth will look gr8 soon,, they have really nice shape and colour
I do have teeth that are set back between others so are hard to clean but I'm finding AquaFresh IsoActive toothpaste after meals really helpful with that. It's a gel that turns into a foam once wet and my teeth are too close together to floss, but it gets right in between them. It's a bit pricey but a little goes a long way and I alternate it with Sensodyne to desentise my teeth.

Hi Chrystal,
Thanks for the info. At a pinch, £2700 would be manageable for me, with a payment plan that let me spread the cost far enough. I know the dentist I've enrolled at offers greater discounts and payment plans for people on some benefits, one of which I could be entitled to but don't claim. I'm not happy about taking a benefit I can do without, even if I am entitled, but if it will help, I will apply for it.
My aim in this treatment plan meeting is just to make it clear that I'm serious, totally prepared for the work involved and to be honest about my financial situation. And I'll see what they say. My Mum also needs a lot doing so they'll be getting a fortune out of us. Maybe that will make them feel more helpful.
Thanks for the reassurance about the moulds too. I probably won't need them on the 8th, but I'm psyched up just in case. When the time comes, I plan to warn the dentist I might have issues because I don't want them to think I'm being uncooperative if I can't stay still. I've read about twiddling your thumbs or something being helpful. Do you know if they will do the lower one first? I know they normally get the 'bad' one over with first, but I think I would gag less if I had the lower done to prepare me a little.
