Getting a filling while in braces?
I went to my regular dentist today for my 6 monthly check up and clean. Everything was fine. Exept I have to have an old filling replaced. They can't fit me in for it until the end of Jan, but im getting braces in 2 weeks. My dentist know's im getting braces, but I don't think the receptionist who made the appointment for the filling does... will it be difficult for them to fill my tooth while I have braces on?

I should imagine it will be ok. If the filling is needed on the chewing surface of the tooth, then they should be able to access it fine. Now if it's on the side/inside of a back tooth that has a molar band, it might not be so easy. If it's in a difficul place during treatment it's needed, right? So surely an Ortho could remove the bracket on that tooth to make things easier if needs be?
The 2 fillings I've had are on the chewing surface, so not inbetween teeth or on the sides, I would think most are.

This only presents a problem in a few situations such as:
1. The bracket being put on the buccal surface where the filling requires replacement.
2. If the filling is in between the teeth and the wire is left in. If it is removed, there is generally no issue.
3. If the filling is extremely deep and ends up requiring root canal treatment, it may be recommended not to move that tooth until some healing has occurred.
If your impressions were taken for indirect bonding (see http://markhamortho.blogspot.com/2008/0 ... w-are.html for more information), then it is critical that your teeth do not change in shape at all before the braces are put on as the tray containing your braces will not conform properly to your teeth.
Hope this helps!

I just had three fillings a few weeks ago. (I can't brush and floss properly with these darned things on...) No problems that I know of, except that I had tooth pain for a few days, but I always have roving tooth pain so I don't know if it was fillings- or braces-related. So far everything seems normal.

Re: Getting a filling while in braces?
ive been having some fillings replaced whilst in braces and my dentist says its not a problem as they are on the biting surface of my teeth so she will be able to work around my braces. i think it depends on the individual situation and where your filling is on your tooth. if you think it might be a problem give them a call and get the receptionist to check its okay. i did this once jsut to make sure. hope you get on okay.
