I didn't, but wish I had. If I hadn't gotten bite turbos on the backs of my front teeth at the same time, I wouldn't have cared in the least.

When I first got them, I had a HORRIBLE lisp. For reasons I can't explain (Murphy's Law?) EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG had to talk to me that day, and wanted to have an extended conversation. I had a 45 minute phone conversation with a manager where I had to do most of the talking, and I no doubt sounded like a fool. I've never met this particular manager face to face so I apologized for the way I sounded and simply said I'd had some dental work done that morning.

When I wasn't on that call, it seemed everyone was stopping by my office.

I ended up calling it a day and sneaking out early. Thank goodness I have a job where I can do that.

~KMG~ wrote:Thanks! It's kind of crazy.....I prepared myself for the worst, so I was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't that terrible. I do however, take that with a grain of salt since they started me out with a "wimpy" wire to ease me into things!
There is no such thing as a wimpy wire. :) My ortho likes to say the first wire "wakes the teeth up." They can't use a strong wire or else your poor teeth will go into shock.

Getting the braces was no problem for me at all. After my first adjustment, I felt no pain at all. I thought to myself, "What in the heck are these archwired folks talking about...adjustments aren't painful..." Then I had my second adjustment and that was the worst.

Congratulations!

I took and one but TWO sick days! I had my braces put on on a Thursday so I took that day and Friday off from work. It wasn't that I felt I physically needed to but I wanted to mentally and emotionally get used to my metal mouth before facing the world. It turned out that it was a good thing I took Friday off; I ended up getting a wicked migraine!
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.

I didn't take a sick day but wished I had. Thinking that I was a confident person with a healthy ego and able to just "fly" with the whole bracing process, was my mistake. Day one of bracing really kicked my ego's butt. I think alot depends on what your occupation is (even for confident people). My profession requires a good deal of conversing and I had no desire to smile and THIS IS SPAM REPORT TO ADMIN THIS IS SPAM REPORT TO ADMIN THIS IS SPAM REPORT TO ADMIN THIS IS SPAM REPORT TO ADMIN on that first day. If you have flexibility at work you should take a "mental health day" so you and your braces can get aquainted before you introduce them to the whole world. If you go right into work that day I hope your day goes better than mine did. Good luck, and keep us posted on how it went.

I get mine on Tuesday and I have an oppertunity to go to Florida for 5 days 8) leaving on Thursday with nominal out of pocket expenses. ...Tagging along with a friend on business.
I think I should go but I am worried abut being too self conscious of the braces  to enjoy the week off.

It was 5 degrees today so thats motivating me even more.

what to do.....?

I work in Customer Service (Manager @ a Self Storage) so I'm getting braced 1/14 in the morning and then going straight to work... I will be taking an 800mg Motrin @ 830 that morning as my appt is @ 930 and then another @ 1:30 when I get to work. I'm prepared!!! However it should be interesting, I'm only getting braced on top that day...

You know what? You may not need to take any Motrin at all. There isn't any "real" pain when getting them on. Save those suckers for when you have a bad adjustment, get elastics or a powerchain for the first time. So much to look forward to. :jump:

I got my top today and went in straight to work. Wasn't painful, just felt pressure on my teeth. What was painful were the brackets against the side of my mouth - just used wax and all was fine!

I didn't take any time off. I had my invisalign trays put on after work on a tuesday, and continued with working my normal week (usual office hours).

I was 99% useless on the wednesday. All I could do was think about my braces, the pain, how difficult it would be when I wanted to eat, brushing my teeth, blah blah. On the thursday I was about 50% useless - non-teeth thoughts were possible, but very difficult to keep a hold of. By friday I was only about 25% useless - I actually managed to do some work, and think about my teeth less.

Luckily I work in a fairly relaxed office, and if anyone noticed my total lack of work for 2 days, no one said anything.

My appointment was 8am and I came in right after and didn't miss a day. I think staying at home will make you more aware of the pain (if you have any). It was fun to come into work and show everyone and get their reactions....I'm sure most were not "honest" - I'm sure they were saying "she's crazy!!" but I don't care. Most were supportive and it's even more fun to hear their braces stories and even find someone else who has braces. You really don't notice until you have them...goes to show you how much people really notice! I hope all goes well with your brace day...don't stress!!
50+ ceramics top and bottom as of 2-16-10
Scheduled to have braces removed on 8-16-12!!

Come on down to FL - it's gorgeous!! colder than usual but definitely warmer than 5 degrees! brrr! I remember those days!! Don't miss it!! You'll feel self conscious whether your there or here! Also, you'll be around people you'll probably not see ever again! You'll be able to get used to your braces without anyone commenting about them unless your friend has something to say! Anyhow, enjoy!

i've ended up taking 2 sick days so far, the combination of braces top and bottom plus a nasty nasty cold/flu thing has left me weak and utterly sick. i only sleep a few hours at a time, 1/2 the time sitting up because i can't breathe, and that is not restful sleep at all.....i feel like a complete wreak, my mouth is covered in sores and i don't really want to eat it hurts so bad to put anything in my mouth. i didn't wax enough in the beginning and that was a mistake. the first day was a piece of cake (relatively speaking), but the days after that (today is day 3, i got my braces on morning of 1/14....) has been quite horrible.
