Food ingredients that stain elastics?

#1 Post by Flamingo »

I'm having my braces fitted next week - ceramics upper & lower.
I know there are certain foods i should avoid whilst wearing braces (cut up apples, meat on the bone etc). However, are there certain ingredients when making food dishes that i should avoid using? Cardamon, saffron, turmeric, cumin? How about tomato based sauces or tinned tomatoes?
Any advice would be gratefully received - thanks in advance ;)

Eating tomato based anything seems to give me horrible orange elastics! not such a good look :)
Curries really stain too, luckily I can change my elastics straight after eating.

I am assuming you actually mean "ligatures" which are the little plastic rings that go around the bracket and hold the wire to the bracket. If so, depending on what color ligature you choose, there are many foods which will stain them or make them go yellowy. The turmeric in curry is a big offender. It will turn most ligs yellow sometimes floro-yellow. Tomato based anything will make lighter ligs pink. Mustard is another bad one as is ketchup and black coffee and tea. You will need to experiment with various colors and foods to see what stains and how much staining you can tolerate. There are many people who can't stand any staining at all, and some who don't care if their ligs are bright yellow from eating curry.
Elastics on the other hand are literally rubber bands that you put in yourself, so any staining of those is a non issue as you can just put in a fresh one.

Please read this page on our main site:

Most common culprits: tomato sauces, curries (particularly the spice turmeric), black coffee, black tea, red wine. If it stains clothing, it stains the ligatures.

One of the ones no one remembers till it happens is cup of noodles and chicken and noodle soup. That yellow stuff floating at the top will stain.
I know somewhere on here there's a whole thread about what stained and what didn't. Its so hard to find them though.
