I'm 54 what was I thinking???

#1 Post by Peggyfaye »

First night in braces...kind of scary, a bit painful & more than a few tears.
Nice to see posts from others here my age, as I was wondering ...did my dentist talk me into it?
What was I thinking?
But, after seeing these posts I'm feeling less freakish & afraid.
Both my daughters had braces, but
when I was a teen my parents were too poor.
Have worked all my life & just want a nice smile.
Only 2 yrs, plus a few surgeries to go~
More time & thank you for this site.
Peggy

braces are definitely worth it, at any age! in no time at all you'll be looking at your beautiful teeth and thinking it was one of the best things you ever did!!!

In a couple of weeks you'll be so used to them that they won't be an issue. The only thing you'll think about is smiling freely when they come off! :D

Hi there! It's never too late to take steps to obtain the beautiful smile you've always wanted! I'm 58, and started on my journey in July,2010. I will have upper and lower jaw surgery in late spring/early summer...what kind of surgeries are you having?

You have come to the right forum for support!

Very grateful. Think I need to apply some of that wax today...
I consider myself pretty tough but the mental thing was working on me.
So encouraged now.
After/during(?) braces will have a post put in the back(in 2 wks), then...a bone graft & 2 implants.
Seemed alot to look forward to, but here I see what others are also going through.
I commend you all & thank you again!

Best of luck Peggy, the dental wax is a must have to start with and don't forget to stock up on plenty of ibuprofen, protein powder and de-sensitizing toothpaste... As most people here will tell you, as soon as you start to see the results of braces you will wonder how you ever lived without them... : )

Welcome Peggy

I think we all have had that ODGWHID .... Oh dear God What have I done stage (sometimes when I am feeling down I still feel that way until I remember why I am doing this). It does get easier and in a couple weeks when you start seeing big improvements you will remember why you are doing this.

You are never too old for ANYTHING, my 96 year old Grandma (who lives on her own) is still waiting to win the lottery and when she does she is going to get her eyes done because she is always wanting to improve her looks.

Congrats on starting your journey, this website is wonderful for support, if you ever need to vent or get talked down from the edge just come here and read posts or post your own. Best website ever, I could not imagine having braces without it for support.

Good Luck

Elle

I am 50 and and starting my fourth week. It's been difficult, especially with the painful canker sores. I have ceramic on the top and the brace on the eye teeth are rubbing. The pain is going away but the sores are still there.
My mouth is dry too and when i work out it's pain. But I trying to think of the end result. Some days OMG it's not even a month yet. I get get the bottom braces in April.

I literally feel your pain. I got mine on last Friday Feb 18. I miss chewing. I find that painkillers and wax can do wonders. I've also used this time as an excuse to eat more ice cream. Then I use a waterpik to wash a lot of the gunk away. I find the worst part is flossing because it's freaky to feel your teeth so tight next to each other.

But I try to imagine this girl I saw at dinner once. She had amazing teeth. Pearls, I tell you! That's how I am going to get through this...knowing that I will get those fabulously aligned teeth for myself.

We're all going to get those fabulous teeth.
