Teeth Grinding/Clenching - Did surgery help???

#1 Post by bracedfaced »

Anyone grind/clench before surgery and now does not after?????

Chronic teeth grinding is what set me off on this orthgnathic journey. I was wearing down my teeth and waking with awful jaw and face pain. I was told that I need orthognathic surgery and it was implied this would help the grinding/clenching. I asked for clarification on whether surgery would *STOP* the grinding/clenching and was told that until my jaw is in proper alignment, we cannot even address my grinding issue.

I have been wearing various mouthguards for over a year now. I hope they are helping to deter further wear on my teeth. I have already worn down my canine teeth and my teeth are really small to begin with so every little bit makes a difference.

I am doing more clenching that grinding now (I think) that I have been wearing a mouth guard. I wake up with such face pain that I am to a point where I don't know what to do. I'm miserable. I cannot concentrate at work and my mood is just awful. I feel like such crap all the time.

Is there anyone out there that can give me hope that surgery will make all this stop?????

While my surgery has not 100% cleared me of clenching, it has 100% cleared me of grinding. I still have some clenching, but that is do to my muscle memory in my TMJs. I have learned many different ways to relax them, and I now (usually) have control over when they clench. Clenching is no longer a controlling factor in my life...like you I was in enormous amounts of pain and was suffering. Surgery has freed me, I am in control of my jaw rather than my jaw in control of me. Best of luck!

I had no clenching/grinding problems before my surgery, but ever since the surgery, I am clenching my teeth a lot. I attribute this to the fact that my jaws have literally changed where they sit with respect to the muscles holding them. It's possible that your clenching/grinding problems may go away after surgery, but its also possible that they may stay the same as they are no, or worsen. It all depends how your teeth and jaws are positioned now compared to how they will sit after the surgery. Your surgeon should be able to give you an idea of how much movement in your jaws you can expect from the surgery based on x-rays.

Good luck! I hope things work out for you.
