I can't close my mouth!

#1 Post by wire25 »

I had brackets and spacers put in 3 days ago. I go back tomorrow for bands and the wire. Due to my narrow are my canine teeth hit the brackets on the teeth below and I'm unable to close my mouth completely so my molars meet to chew. I don't know if I need to tell the dentist, or if this is normal and I just have to stick it out til my teeth shift enough. Anyone else have this problem and any advice?

I just got my braces this week so I'm no expert, but I think it's probably normal. I can't close my mouth completely, only enough to chew on my molars on the right side. But it doesn't hurt to check with the dentist just to make sure. I asked any and every question I could think of before/after I had mine installed. Good luck with your journey! Happy St. Patty's Day!

Don't worry too much. My molars still don't touch and I'm a year in. There are going to be a lot of things that don't seem normal but are. Congrats!

My ortho shaved down the bottom brackets until the tops no longer hit. I'd mention it to the doc for sure. I'm getting debraced in two weeks. :D

I also have the same problem since day one of braces- and 8 1/2 months later my molars still don't touch properly. My ortho assures me they will at some point- but I'm still waiting :)

My molars touch some weeks then don't the next , I would say that's something we all go through with braces. But when I got my lowers, like you, some of my top teeth clashed on the lower brackets, preventing the back teeth from touching. I told my ortho and he applied molar build ups. I was back again a few das later though because it didn't completely solve the problem and so he repositioned the lower brackets.

I brought this up with my Ortho because I didn't like the thought of possibly biting down too hard one day (I also grind at night) and chipping my upper teeth or popping off a lower bracket.
Braces: Metal fixed upper and lower
Estimated treatment time: 18-24 months
Braces Removed: August 2013 (after 33 months in braces)
Retainers: Upper & lower essix and lower bonded

Ever since I had my spacers in (in braces for 2 weeks now) my bit has been off. Seems to change daily. Give it a week and see what happens.

Thanks for the replies. I was pretty down in the dumps when the molar build up went on. Eating did not become any easier that's for sure. But I am slowly finding things that are easy to eat such as meatloaf. I find myself constantly looking in the mirror to notice any changes or movement. You know what they say a watched pot never boils.

Loradora- I'm so jealous lol Wow braces only a year! I'm hoping to stick with the 18 mos the ortho told me.

Itsabouttime22- so are your teeth relatively straight?
