Foods you try to get away with having braces...

Mine is Doritos. I was told no tortilla chips or anything of the sort but they are so delicious, I can't help it. I'm just careful. :)

I really love crunchy stuff for my late night snack....apples, carrots and tortilla chips. The apples i cut up, the tortilla chips i buy the round ones and they're easy to eat. The carrots are a little more difficult. Since I can't bite into them i buy the baby carrots, and sometimes I get lucky and they're the tiny tiny ones and i can just pop them in my mouth. My latest bag wasn't so easy, I'm actually cutting them in half length wise...which makes me a little sad. lol. I'm just worried that trying to bite then, even with my back teeh, will end badly.
And i eat gummy bears...loads of gummy bears :D

I tried to eat some pita chips but only got thru two of 'em before I gave up.

Other than that, I just got a "prescription" on Friday from my ENT doc for jolly ranchers :| to try and coax out this salivary gland stone. I opted for lemonheads though as they are slightly softer.

Nacho Doritios, chips and salsa, gummy bears, beef jerky....

I wonder how hard it will be to continue with bottom braces as well as top.

I've tried it all. Nothing is off limits and I've yet to break anything. The only thing that I can't physically eat is biting into an apple. But I bite into burgers, pears, and everything crunchy. If you're new to braces, once the soreness is gone, you can eat pretty much anything, just be careful.

Couldn't I just get a small bag of Doritos and pound it into little crumbs before I open it?

I was very careful at first, I LOVE crunchy foods so it was hard to change my diet.

I have been braced for almost 5 months and this week I just finally started eating popcorn again. OMG YUMMY!!!!!!!! I try to avoid any kernels. I have eaten cashews since week 2, almonds if in food but not just raw too hard. I eat chips, cut up carrots, cut up apples, celery....

The only thing I have avoided is gum ( but I might try that non sticky stuff soon), loved kashi chewy granola bars but have avoided them, that will be something I can't wait to eat. I can eat a burger but prefer to cut into strips so it is not as messy.

I find having a waterpik helps to clean the teeth properly from all these "no no" foods

The only time I broke a bracket was when I was eating salad with a small spoon and my front upper bracket popped off, very annoying.

I've kinda been saddened by a lot of healthy foods becoming harder or annoying to eat (spinach/kale, whole apples, carrots). I used to snack on a lot of healthy stuff, but soft foods generally aren't super healthy.

Oh well!! nothing is really off limits to me except whole apples and carrots. I avoid popcorn now because of the pain of one kernel.

My aunt made homemade caramels for easter and I still managed those in tiny little bites. mmmmm sticky!!!

I've slowly tried just about everything. I waited 2 months to chew gum, then finally got desperate, and lo and behold - it was fine! As long as you chew sugar free gum nothing sticks. My first meal after being braced was pizza, crust and all, lol. I eat chips with no problems. Celery's been tricky - I just cut it up in little pieces. And I tried eating a solid chocolate easter bunny last week, that was a disaster. But nothing's off limits for me!

Hahaha! I did the whole chocolate bunny thing over easter. I had to bite it on the sides of my mouth, but I sure did get it down. I'm feeling quite reckless these days, since I'm already 3 months over my original estimate in braces.

The truth is that with braces on, you can pretty much still enjoy all of the foods you used to before braces. The difference is that you might have to eat them a bit differently. As mentioned above, you can eat an apple, but might cut them up into pieces and chew at the back of the mouth.

We had two patients at the same birthday party and one was biting into carrot sticks. The other one says to the one eating the carrot that he shouldn't be doing that. He shrugs his shoulders and says he has been eating everything since his braces went on. That's when the other person decides that he bite into the carrot stick also, and promptly bites off an anterior bracket haha.

It's really a matter of just being careful :)

Thanks...I was so scared at first when they said no nuts, no tortilla chips. I still eat those from time to time, just very carefully. And I haven't ventured into gum yet, I'm scared.
