Braces while pregnant

#1 Post by peckabel »

Hey Everyone
I have braces and we are thinking of having a baby within the time I have my braces on. I havent found too much information about having braces on while pregnant, but most of the info I have found said its quite safe and that your teeth actually move faster, speeding up the process.

Just want to know if anyone out there has been pregnant while having their braces on? I only have the bottom on at the moment and will get the tops on in 2 months and I find it quite painful whenever they are adjusted. I just want to know if its bareable having adjustments without really taking any pain killers?? I also have an RME in which i dont turn anymore, but i cant even imagine how unpleasent it would be having morning sickness with it in!

Any advice would be great

I dont have much advice to offer, sorry...but I too am TTC while having braces. I have read a couple of blogs of pregnant women and braces and all seem to go well. I even read one woman that had her braces taken off right before her due date because she didnt want to have labor with them on, then had them put back on when the baby was born. lol

I have heard that your teeth do move quicker during pregnacy. My hairstylist's husband is a dentist and told her to get braces during that time and a girl at my dentist's office had braces while she was expecting. I'm assuming they are on to something..

I just had mine off at 19 weeks pregnant. I had originally planned to get them put on just before TTC my first son, but thought better of it not knowing what it was going to feel like or how I was going to take to pregnancy. I was glad I waited only because I was one of those lucky women who puked her guts out 24 hours a day and caring for my teeth was the last thing on my mind. Having the expander in at that point also would have been pretty horrible.

But since I had them on already for almost a year this time around we went ahead and got pregnant and it wasn't too bad. I definitely did neglect caring for them a bit just because I felt so awful, but not enough to screw anything up. And I am having a hard time with my retainers (gagging in particular) but you won't have those for a time anyhow.

I took advil for the pain early on since I wasn't pregnant, but now I'm limited to tylenol. It's not so bad though. It works enough.

Good luck with the braces and ttc!

Heather
