24 hours with lingual
Moderator: bbsadmin
Do you have wires on?
Eating was the worst to begin with but I am learning what I can and cant eat. It gets easier everyday.
Speech is a little different, but again each day I do get better. I stumble over some words but its getting better. I have to talk all the time at work so I have lots of practice. Not many have noticed which surprises me. I think I must sound better to others than I sound to myself.
What I absolutely love is that I dont have to see the braces and no one else has any idea unless I tell them. I am really so glad I got linguals cause I dont think I could have completed my sentence seeing my teeth with braces on the labial side. I know its vain and Im such a chicken, but I had the option and ran with it.

I agree with you. So far I am glad I made the decision of going with linguals. The reason why I didn't have braces before was the fact that I would be showing the braces for almost two years (I know I'm vain too).
I have a wire joining all the braces and a kind of plastic band that goes from my third teeth to the fith one (fouth is missing).
I have to say I don't have pain but my teeth are very thight and they are painful if I touch them. But I just had the braces less than 24 hours ago.
Can you chew? I really don't know what to try a part from liquids and soft bread.

mb sounds like you have something very similiar to me! I have my front two teeth braced, no wire on both second teeth. Instead there is an elastic band from my second to my fifth. My fourth on both sides are missing too. My fifth also is wired in and then wire all the way back.
My back teeth dont close so I found it hard to chew at first but its heaps better now. I probably dont chew as well as I did before but nothing that is a problem. It did take about a week or so to learn to chew properly with these things on.
My teeth pain is settling which is great (though when there is pain I think maybe there will be movement....weird huh??!!). I can fully chew with no pain on one side and the other is still a bit sore.
I also reckon I have a space forming between two teeth which I am stoked about!! even if its my imagination, at least I think its working!
Hows your speech mb?

My speech is not good at the moment, I try not to speak but I think the problem is my tongue, it hurts when I talk. I have small cuts now, I have put a lot of wax today and think it will help.
Eating is still a problem my back teeth don't close so it is impossible to chew anything.
At the moment I am not worried because I just had the braces on Monday and I know it will take time until I get used to them.
My teeth are painful mainly if I touch them, how long does this last for?

Speech will get better if you hang in there and keep practicing. I sing songs to help. Each day gets better. Some words still elude me, but it is getting better. I think there will be some words I just wont get but Im ok with that. Apparently I sound better to others than I sound to myself.
I had some small cuts too. Salty water helped heaps! I was always rinsing with it and havent had any cuts since my first week. I used wax just up until my second week but now I havent used any for a good two weeks. Wax helped me get used to it and then I would just use less and less. It will get heaps better.
Chewing can be a problem for me too but I am learning what I can and cant eat and how to chew differently. Probably took a good two weeks to eat properly.
My teeth have just stopped hurting and Ive been in wires for one week today. My brackets where put on three weeks before. I thought my teeth would never stop hurting, but they have settled. I cant bite into anything with my front teeth but they are the ones meant to be moving at the moment so Im ok with that.
It all will definetly get better!!! hang in there! Let me know how you go!! do you only have your top arch done? Are you getting lower ones?

Thanks a lot for your comments dkt3
I think I am going to take it easy for the first week and try not to talk much.
I asked a work colleague if my speech was as bad as I thought, he said it wasn't bad but it was worse than yesterday. But today is still my second day with braces and the main problem is that my tongue hurts.
Have your teeth moved after just one week with the wire?
At the moment I just have the top arch but in a few months I will have the lower ones (labial). My lower teeth are not that bad so they probably require less time.

No problem mb!
Practice saying words to yourself. The more you practice the better it gets. I was talking to people at work about my speech today and ALL said they didnt notice anything different!
I think the first few days I was worse for a while but after a week I started getting better. My tongue no longer gets tired. But if your tongue hurts wax for a while and salt water is great!
I think my teeth have moved slightly. My bite is a little different and between two teeth I dont have to pull up the floss anymore, it just goes up the gaps. So moved very slightly.
My tongue is really tough now I think. I can run it agains the brackets and wires with no problems. Just takes time unfortunately and I am not always the most patient person.

I will have the braces for 21 months, it souds so long. The good thing about the linguals is that you can see improvement during that time.
My ortho told me that the gaps of my 4th teeth removed in each side should close in 3 months. It sounds very quick, if that is the case we should start seeing our teeth move soon. Anyone had teeth removed? How long does it take?
I can't wait to see the results...

I have upper linguals (no lower) and just got two brackets fitted to teeth that were too twisted for them to go on previously. As a result my back teeth dont touch at all and I found it difficult to eat for the first three days but after a while you get used to it. Cut everything up is my advice and take it slow. It will get better. I had to cut up a Subway sandwich which was a little embarrassing! Just takes time which is frustrating, but its the way it is. Keep at it!
Hi
I still have the gap in my molars but it has improved. My lower teeth don't touch the top brackets anymore because my back molars touch although they don't fit properly.
It is not that bad once you get used to it. I can eat everything although it takes longer. I even eat nuts sometimes now.
It seems that your case is very similar to mine, do you both have an overbite?

Yeah I do have an overbite. I'm so glad I found this discussion board though cause there are so many little things the ortho just didn't mention! I was freaking out thinking maybe he'd made a mistake and wondering if i'd ever be able to chew again!
For the benefit of all those out there who are wanting to know about other peoples' experiences, my first day was bearable but the second and third were horrible. I went into work on the second day hoping to sit quietly in my office in silence but it was impossible to be there without having to talk and by the end of the day my tongue was so swollen and sore I could only smile and nod- plus I was STARVING!!. Couldn't manage anything other than mashed potato with gravy (go KFC!) and soup with no bits. I took the third day off to rest my tongue and cause I felt like such a loser with my speech impediment.
I generally love my food and now I'm tending to swallow it in lumps rather than trying to chew it. I find if I cram more in, there's always some that will go down! Trying to get myself up to speed before Christmas dinner!

I felt the same for at least the first two weeks but it really does get better. Use wax to help your tongue adjust. I thought I would have to use wax everyday but after the first two weeks I hardly use any. Sometimes an area of my tongue will feel sore and I use wax and rinse with salty water and it goes away within a day.
Eating gets a lot better but wont be like without braces. It still takes me longer and I dont chew as well as I did, but I have no problems now. I have a slight overbite so my bottom teeth touch my linguals on my upper teeth.
