Food question

#1 Post by Jensniffer »

Ok so I am reading a lot about soft foods and food to avoid. Is it because this stuff will hurt your braces or your mouth? Or is because your teeth hurt as they move around? And why no gum? Sorry for the questions that may seem obvious but I have 10 days until my braces are on and I am trying to gather as much info as I can before they go on. Thanks!

Soft food is best at the start because your mouth will probably be sore from the pressure the braces will put on your teeth, it will be sore to bite and chew for awhile so soft food is easier and i think the reason for no gum is because it will stick to wires and stuff, i know people who chew gum but i personally haven't tried that yet

It is a bit of both; crunchy or hard foods, can break brackets off, pop wires out or just get stuck.

Soft foods are good when your teeth are sensitive and it hurts when you have to chew your food.

I lost 25 lbs since getting braces! Most of that was lost in the first 3 months. I have kept it off also, which makes me never want to take these things off!

Soft foods usually due to pain I think or just unable to bite down on hard items. I was able to eat pretty well after a few days with the top teeth braced. Bottom teeth braced was a different matter. I'm still on semi-soft foods, but the bite buildups is making it a tad difficult.

The foods to avoid is to avoid broken brackets I think and stuff generally getting stuck in them? I'm guessing. I was told to avoid certain things to keep the brackets from coming off and I still tried it with no issue. Just be careful. Some foods requires more cleaning afterwards if you do eat them -- i.e. chips.

Gum? I could chew gum with the top braces, I tried with the bottom braces and it got stuck in the brackets which was pretty icky to deal with. I'm probably going to avoid it from now on.

Don't worry, at first it seems like you can't eat anything but you end up getting used to it fairly quick. Just hang in there

I got braces 3 weeks ago. My sister and I went straight out to eat chicken yaki udon. Wasnt too bad, but then I read on my instructions that I was supposed to just stick to soft foods because the glue was still in process or something. The next few days were really weird getting used to eating with all that stuff in my mouth.

Then like last week it felt like I had cavities when I bit down on food--I guess that's due to moving roots. But it's fine now. I had steak and potato chips the other day. For me, it's still weird to bite down on something with my front teeth. So usually I cut up my food and stick it inside my mouth.

My favorite new braces food was french toast with lots of syrup, and eggs. Oh ya, and oatmeal--I love oatmeal. I still eat a lot of soft food but I'm getting kind of sick of ice cream, pudding and jello. Never thought I would!!

Best advice I got--get a waterpik to get all that food out of your braces!!!

My diet hasn't changed at all because of braces. My lower archwire bent and popped off a few ligs one time when I was eating big chunks of chocolate but I DIY-reassembled itand had no other problems since. I chew gum after a meal if I can't clean my teeth.

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions! I love oatmeal and eat lots of already so looks like that will continue! I have been paying attention to what I have been putting in my mouth lately and I will have to change a few daily staples and I realize that I bite a lot with my front teeth, that will change!
