40 something researching braces for the first time...
Hello everyone! I have had a lifetime of crowded crooked upper and lower teeth. I guess it always bothered me, but never to the point of correcting it. In the last 5 years I've noticed that my teeth are shifting forward and the crookedness is getting worse. As a busy mom of two active children, a household to run and a job, will I have time to squeeze in Ortho appts for myself before the kids need them? My husband says I should get it done before he has to finance the kids.... Spread out the expense. So there is a wealth of information here, metal braces, self litigating braces, to extract or do without extraction and see what happens and if necessary then extract? I've had 2 consults thus far, both orthos say that straightening my teeth will be easy, but do I want to correct the overbite as well? Do I want perfection or will I settle for a B+ ( nice straight smile with a slight overbite). I'm confused to say the least, one recommended extraction of one healthy tooth, the other said no extraction is necessary, however we'll see where we are at at 6 months, then decide if it is necessary???? Seems like everyone does their extractions up front. Guess I need a 3rd consult. Also, the cost of braces varied between orthos 5200 all metal - 3Mbrand, or 5700 top 3M ceramic clarity and bottom 3Mmetal - both non self litigating, thus will be using ligatures. The second ortho estimated 6200 for Innovation C ceramic top and Innovation R metal bottom, both self litigating. I am overwhelmed with decisions to make. Both offices are fine, staff seems nice, the pricier one is a little more personable, where as the cheaper ortho seems to do a higher volume and I don't see too much info on the 3M products.
I just wanted to introduce myself as I lurk and read your stories. I must be over analyzing this. I have and xray appt at ortho #1 and a consult appt next week to get the details of what they have planned. Thanks for reading....

Hiya
I'm 46 and have a brace. Been in it a year now. I had two upper teeth removed. Like you, I had several consultations, and it was never mentioned that I would need teeth out. However, I couldn't afford the treatment. I was lucky enough to be accepted by a student ortho dentisry school, and am being treated for free. They decided two teeth out, or jaw surgery! I didn't fancy having my jaw operated on. I think there are many ways to skin a cat, and each orthodontist will come up with something different. You have to decide what you feel happiest with.
Good luck
Angie

Hi Angie,
Thanks for your reply. Such a wonderful forum with people who are actually interested in braces and others brace adventure. I am hoping to try to do this without an extraction and to re-evaluate the situation later to when we see my progress or lack of progress with braces on. I guess I'm most comfortable going the cautious route. Hope you are doing well in your braces journey!

Hey Nettie,
I really don't think you can over-analyze spending thousands of dollars on braces!!! But I would research types of braces, and their rate of success etc. In 2yrs or whatever, all that will matter is whether or not they did the job you wanted...
As far as orthos, I would also check their reputation online, and also just trust your first gut instinct. I wish I would have...
I have been looking for you!! Are you going to have a braces story when you get started??
By the way, I got my nasty pre-braces pics up, and my ticker finally!!

Hi Klobird;
I had trouble finding my own post, I think it's in the wrong place... Ooops.
Once I get started I will start a new thread in "my braces story section". I'm positive I am getting braces but just not sure which ortho to goto. I am seeing a 4th ortho this week, I am torn by convenience(location), $$$$, going to a single orthodontic practice or a group practice with more convenient hours but possibly being seen by different orthos depending on the day. Yes, I am looking at the reviews of each office and hope to finalize my decision by the end of the week and to schedule my Bday.
I'll stop by to check out your pictures in a bit. I've already taken my before shots and wonder why I waited so long!

Hi Nettie
Convenience and opening hours are important because you'll be there about every six weeks! I travel from Southampton to London by train. It takes about two hours to get there, and it is definitely not convenient when something goes wrong eg wire poking into my cheek and causing a huge ulcer, or clashing teeth. But definitely go with your gut instinct.
Good luck
