It Does Get Better Doesn't it???

#1 Post by BenR »

I had my braces fitted to my uppers 2 days ago and I'm in some discomfort: I have ulcers inside my cheeks,my teeth are hurting,I am aware of them in my mouth every waking minute, eating is painful as is brushing and I even started having a minor panic that I won't be able to last 18 months like this!

I'm in need of some reassurance, it will get better won't it??? Please tell me it will : )If it feels this bad for the next 18 months it will be hellish!

Yes! it gets better, especially when you start to see your teeth moving, that is amazing! It does hurt to start, but I just thought of that as good, as at least I know it is the braces starting to work! The inside of your mouth will toughen up, but use wax now that you need it. It will all be so worth it, I have had mine on for 6 months and time has flown by, and I saw changes within a month! You will look back on this in a couple of months time, and wonder why you were panicking!

Thanks Annie! Feel bit more relaxed about it after reading that. You're right from now on I shall re-frame the pain from being a negative thing into the positive as it means the teeth are on the move : )

Oh - it will get soooo much better. I wanted to rip mine out of my mouth the first week I had them, and I was seriously considering going in to have them removed right away. But (thanks to this board and advice from people here!) I made myself stick it out at least a week, and things got much better after that. You should see some pretty major results in the next few weeks, which will make you realize how worthwhile the ordeal is. And after about three months, I think it was, you should be able to eat just about anything (even forbidden things if you're careful!). I'm so glad I did it - all the discomfort was worth it, and I know it will be for you, too. Good luck - I hope you start to feel better soon.

Yes! I know EXACTLY how you feel, I've only had mine for 6 weeks and that 1st week I thought I was gonna die and wanted the braces OFF!

Check out my blog and read about it, I promise you in a few days you'll feel much better. There is light at the end of the tunnel and think how beautiful your teeth will look!

It does get better, BenR :)
I'm only in my 2nd week and it has been A LOT better than my 1st week. My braces feel very comfortable in my mouth and brushing is not painful anymore. I've already seen changes too!! :D Each day it is becoming less painful to eat too, so hang in there; it will be worth it!

Thanks everyone for replying,appreciate it.

Ripping them off, yes that is exactly how I've been feeling! I was giving serious consideration to getting them removed but I've woken up this morning and the discomfort is a little less then yesterday so I will definitely keep going. I can't wait to start seeing results!

Good luck everyone : )

It gets better. I had upper braces put on in March and the lower ones this past week. The first few days are yucky and I am eating lots of soft food, but the real discomfort hasn't lasted long for me either time.

I do notice that certain teeth hurt more than others. Maybe because those are moving? Nothing unbearable, but I feel them when I chew or brush my teeth.
Metal braces from March 2011 until October 2012. Hawley retainers since October 2012.

Hang in there!! And yes I agree that the pain is a sign of POSITIVE things ahead. After a while with mine I started getting used to the fact that the pain meant significant improvement, and I would actually start to get a little bummed when it didn't hurt or I didn't feel it

You will get accustomed to it and in the end it'll be sooo worth it. I went in for my last asjustment 4 eeks ago and I was in soooo much pain but when I look at the 'before' pics and see where I am now, every bit of agony is worth it! Plus it's an excuse to eat more ice cream, it feels so good and helps calm some of the pain ;)

Just brush afterwards!! :P
