25yr old - Braces on 27/01/2011 - Starting SureSmile program

#1 Post by Melody85 »

Hey guys :D

My name is Melody, 25 years old from Australia. I wanted to join this site after searching many websites prior to having my braces put on - I was so worried about it all I spent alot of time reading other people's experiences and I find it did help me prepare & know what to expect. So I decided i would also like to contribute and help others who may be in a similar position.

My braces went on 27th January of this year, ceramic uppers and metal lowers.
I was advised I have a shorter lower jaw relative to the upper jaw, a scissor bite, overbite of 5mm compared to the normal 2-3mm and an overjet of 3-10mm compared to a normal 2-3mm. Yes I am a bit of a mess, but i've seen worse too.
I was meant to have braces as a child but as i was an EXTREMELY self conscious, overweight and sensitive child I just refused, as i didn't want anymore bullying than I was already going through.

As i got older, I started to look after myself and got into great shape and my confidence grew. However my teeth had started to get worse (my 2 front teeth were pushed in, and the teeth on either side stuck out) Apart from my teeth I was otherwise comfortable with my appearance, I even did promotional modelling work on one occassion however my smile meant I didn't get called back for anything more. My smile was letting me down. The turning point was when a guy told me I should fix my 'horse teeth' and rather than get upset, I went straight to the dentist for a referal. It was something i had to do for myself before it got too late.

I was quoted $8,000 to go ahead with it. They were putting me ahead to take part in the new SureSmile program, which apparently cuts your time in braces. I was originally told it would be 20 months but it will be less. I was also going to need extractions. Yes it made me cringe, as i realised my health insurance did not cover orthodontic work. I'd need to wait 2 years. I didn't want to wait, so I bit the bullet and I agreed to go ahead with it. Lucky I have a good job as my parents were not going to help me, not that i would dare ask them to!

After having then put on, I hated it. I hated when i smiled and my lips got stuck in the brackets. No-one had told me how to use that wax stuff. My gums were so sore and I had so much trouble eating. I kept telling myself that it will all be worth it. My job involves meeting with clients so that was also hard - acting confident when i felt like I had a fat mouth. Especially as one tooth really stuck out - having a bracket on top of it meant my mouth looked plain stupid. It was hard, the first couple of months were horrible.

Yesterday I had the 2 extractions, to make room to fit all my top teeth in perfectly straight. I'd asked to be put out so i dont remember it. Afterwards i went straight to the orthodontist where they replaced the wire and tightened it all up alot to start closing the gaps. It was painful, and probably the worst hurdle i have to get over. So far, so good. I can't wait for my perfect smile :)

I just thought i'd explain this SureSmile treatment as it is fairly new and i'm not sure everyone will know what i am talking about.
The orthodontist I am seeing is the only one in my state who is doing the program, which uses advanced technology to tailor your wires especially designed for you.

To get started, they cover your teeth with a nasty tasting white paste substance, and you have to stay very still and keep your tongue out of the way as they take photos of your teeth using a 3D camera. It slowly moves around every part of your teeth and builds a 3D mould onto a computer. You can actually watch the image be created as they take the photos, it is quite amazing.
It took about an hour for them to finish that part. They then take normal photos of front and side view, smiling and non smiling, along with X-Rays. After all this data is collected they send it over to somewhere in America (I forget exactly where) and an individual tooth model is made for a custom designed archwire to be created, by a robot of all things.

They create the set of wires for the entire treatment and they are sent back to my ortho in Australia and then I start the program. It apparently is more efficient than the ortho hand moulding the wire. So my first couple of months I have been wearing the normal wire, but i'm due to go back on 1st of June where I will have these custom made wires put in place and my teeth will be moving faster :)

Hi Melody! Thanks for your story! I just thought I'd post a reply as we've got a bit in common. I'm also 25 and from Aus (Melb). I got my braces on late October last year so have already had them for almost 6 months! I too have clear braces on my uppers (just the social 6 though) and metal lowers, all Damon self ligating. I am also doing suresmile! I just had my first set of custom wires fitted 2 weeks ago (along with class 2 elastics and a powerchain. Fun fun! I really thought this whole braces thing was quite nice when I only had the brackets and wires but elastics are hard work and make snacking a bit difficult. I can't open my mouth very wide, but also can't be bothered taking them out and changing them for the sake of a little snack! It's probably actually a good thing as I only ever snack on unhealthy stuff anyway!). I have 3 sets of suresmile wires until I'm done so I feel like I can see the light at the end if the tunnel. You'll have to let me know how many sets you get! Good luck with your suresmile journey!

Hey there, thanks so much for your reply :) I'm in Perth by the way. How long until your braces come off? I'm a while off yet but im so excited for the day I think I may just hug the orthodontist after I look in the mirror lol. They did say that not everyone goes on this SureSmile program, you have to be 'selected' which i'm not sure as to why...maybe they just tell you that so you feel special haha. But if it's meant to be the best then i'm going to assume that's why it's so expensive. If you don't mind me asking, how much did your cost?
And does everyone have to wear elastics? I don't know what the purpose of elastics are exactly...sounds very annoying to have them. No one has mentioned them to me as something to expect coming up.
The short amount of time i've worn braces I have seen a big difference, it's amazing really. Even my regular dentist was surprised when i went back to him after a couple of months, cause my fang tooth had been put back into place, yay!

My ortho's original estimate was 15-18 months in braces. I'm hoping as I only have two wires to go that I'll have them off at the start of next year, which is 13-15 months. I have 3 weddings between Jan and march to go to and would love to not be a brace face for them! That being said I have already been to 3 weddings with them on! My braces cost $8300 altogether. The base price was $6800 + $1000 for suresmile and $500 for clear top braces. It is a lot all together but suresmile is reducing my time in braces by at least 6 months so I think it is worth it for sure. Plus by the time I get some money back from private health insurance and at tax time I think I'll be out of pocket around $5000. Reasonable for lifelong confidence when smiling I think!
Now to my elastics... Class 2 elastics go from your upper canine teeth down to the molars that are 2nd from the back at the bottom. They are being used to correct a deep bite/overbite. The idea I think is to pull the top teeth back so they line up with the bottom ones. I didn't know I was getting them until they pit them on at my last adjustment. And I only went in to get a poking wire fixed last week and that's when they hit me with the powerchain. Mean!

Girlies, your stories sound very similar to my own, actually. I am 21, and living in Sydney, but was 20 when I started my treatment, as I've only been 21 for almost a month.

I actually got my braces a day after you, Melody85, on 28 January, 2011! I have ceramic braces on top and bottom to fix an underbite class III. I had to wear a plate expander on my upper arch for 3 months before getting braces, and the orthodontist has expected a overall treatment time of 12-15 months, which includes the plate wear. The treatment cost $6745.00 lump sum, and would have been $7100.00 otherwise.

I have never heard of the SureSmile technology! How uncanny that both of you are doing it. I'm still not sure I understand it completely (it sounds like Invisalign but for braces), and it's the first I've heard of it. I wonder why my orthodontist didn't mention it.

You are more than welcome to have a look at my blog http://saybraces.blogspot.com/ and feel free to post a comment, too. I post all my progress photos and everything to do with braces there.

How funny is all this, actually!

Just thought i'd post an update from last time. I go to the ortho next wednesday to have my braces tightened for the first time since the extractions, and they will be setting me up with these fancy custom made wires i've heard so much about. The extra wire that had been wound tight around the teeth on either side of the gaps is now loose and quite annoying to be honest! The main arch wire is also digging in to my gum at the very back so i'm guessing that means the gaps are starting to close! I was looking through my photos and purposely searched for the few where i am smiling. My teeth looked so bad, I am only really seeing it now after my teeth have straightened up alot in such a short time. It's quite amazing really. Braces are a pain, but i am excited that there is significant and noticeable progress going on! I need to upload some pics on here once i figure it out.

This is a photo taken just after the top row of braces was put on (I then had the lowers on 6 weeks later).
Sorry it's a bit blurry i don't have the best camera.
I really hate looking at how ugly my teeth looked, but they have come a long way now, since this was taken in January.
I will add some more pics as I take them!

You know, your teeth look so much like my son's. His central incisors are set back a little and the laterals stick out. Isn't it usually the canines that are like that? I'll be watching your progress closely!

Are you happy with the progress you're seeing so far?

Okay this is a picture of me today, and I think you can see a fairly noticeable improvement after a fairly short time?
My 2 front teeth were originally pushed inward, and the teeth on either side were sticking out, and now they are a bit straighter. I'm happy with the way that it is going so far. I have 2 gaps from extractions that you can't see in the photo but I can't wait for those to close and I should be on the home stretch!

I was going to reply to what you said in another blog about getting ortho bucks for being a good little braces wearer.
But OMG--your new pics show an amazing change!!! I love it--and I get soooo encouraged by the pics!!! Your smile is looking fantastic!!!

Anyway--ya, we all get ortho bucks, and to spin the wheel on your birthday for prizes etc etc..., but then they take your pic and put it on their website when you win things, or when you use your bucks--uhhh nooo--I'm 55, not 7!! I want that Ipad too...--just give it to me and let me go home!!! And at 55, you better believe I'm going to remind them to give me my bucks!!!
No 7 yr old is beating me out!!!!

Soooo today I had my first adjustment with my SureSmile wire -woo! I was looking at the wire before they put it in and noticed it had some slight kinks in it. I asked if that was normal, and they said yes, it is specially designed to work with my teeth and the pre-made little bends in the wire actually help guide the teeth into the perfect position - more efficiently than if the orthodontist were to bend the wire by hand (apparently).

Okay that's all well and good, they replace my wires with these new ones and i have high hopes.
But oh my how it feels so much more tight and painful than my first couple of adjustments! Im quietly cursing as I went in there hungry and knew I wouldn't be eating any time soon - ouch! They then tighten around the gap that i have on either side of my front top teeth and send me on my way in alot of pain. I tell myself that pain is beauty...

Can't wait for these damn gaps to close. I took a photo so you can get an idea of what i'm working with here - i'm a gap toothed freak currently. It's very attractive:

These gaps are not closing AT ALL and i'm starting to get very frustrated. Also i am finding it hard to brush the teeth surrounding the gap as the wire blocks access by my toothbrush. i don't know how i am supposed to floss this area or if I am meant to at all, but I never really feel my teeth are 100% clean and it is annoying. I have been asked on dates and have turned them down as i feel unattractive at the moment - I hate turning down these opportunities, but when a guy asks you to dinner and you have braces, you cant help but start to fear the possibility of getting food stuck in your braces and turning him off! SIGH. I'm probably over-reacting but I can't help it. i feel ugly right now
