Extractions
I'm going in for my first two (of four) extractions on June 8th. What on earth can I expect?? Will I be numbed or full knocked out? Will I need someone with me to escort me in a car or will I be able to navigate public transportation myself?
Actually, more importantly.... WHAT THE HECK WILL HAPPEN TO MY TEETH POST-EXTRACTIONS?!
Maybe I can get them back and con the tooth fairy?

Re: Extractions
They will probably just numb you.. its nothing to be scared of, don't worry !
When I had my extractions (three of them total), they first numbed my mouth with a cotton swab, then waited a bit and injected the needle. It was a small sharp pain but just try not to think about whats happening! They take some sort of pliers and gentle pull and tug back and forth until the tooth is out. You'll only feel a weird popping sensation and it won't hurt After I felt a bit lightheaded so I just sat in the chair until I was feeling better, then went on my way.
I would say try not to use public transportation if you don't have to.... the bleeding can be excessive and a bit messy and you'd probably look a little crazy on a bus haha...
Take it easy for the rest of the day.. the bleeding can last hours... don't be scared
Good luck ! p.s. I got to keep my teeth! Just ask for them !

Re: Extractions
The procedure was pain free for me, slight sensation when they numb your mouth but that's it, quite amazing really.
Try not to be suck on any straws or drink hot drinks, you want a clot to form and stay there to stop the bleeding.
Also be careful not to chew your own cheeks, the anaesthetic is that good that you can't feel what your biting!

Re: Extractions
I had my 2 pre-molars extracted about 4 hours ago. So far, so good. Bleeding's stopped, numbness is starting to subside. I just ate some noodles for dinner. Worst thing about the procedure was one of the numbing shots (must have hit the end of a nerve the dentist said). The actual extraction felt weird, but didn't really hurt. I did get some pain pills and figured I'd take one -- just in case. No need to be in pain unnecessarily!
Ps - my 14 yr old son got his braces off today!

Re: Extractions
Good luck tomorrow! I got 4 pre molars extracted by my dentist on may 17th... Mine did all four at once so I could get it over with. They numb the mouth with swabs then do injections... Not as bad as it sounds more weird than anything else. Then for the pre molars that were really crowded my dentist used a cavity drill to make them narrower... After they rock the teeth back and forth until they come loose... no pain just pressure and it's creepy I think... But pretty fast...CountessDeSangre wrote:I'm going in for my first two (of four) extractions on June 8th. What on earth can I expect?? Will I be numbed or full knocked out? After the assistant asked me if I wanted the teeth - I didn't, though I did see them but 3 were all narrower from him filing them down... Then my hubby drove me home, my dentist recommended I have a driver beforehand... But they had prescribed me ativan for nerves which i'd taken right before so that may be why... Nicer to have someone there if you can...

I had 10 out all at once! I was definitely put under! I must say, the braces are hurting way more than the post extractions.

Re: Extractions
I had my extractions done on the 8th and I didn't have to take any meds at all! No percocet, no advil, nothing! (I'm a frequent migraine sufferer so I have a high pain tolerance) I am however noticing today that my teeth feel annoying to me. The extraction sites are fine. But my other teeth feel what I can only describe as like someone massaging each individual tooth and I want it to stop! Does anyone know what I'm talking about? The only way I can make the pain stop for a bit is if i clench my teeth or eat something. If you do understand what I'm trying to explain, what did you do to make the annoyance stop? I'm trying to stay away from taking medication because I feel like it won't help.
Re: Extractions
It really depends on if you're getting local anesthesia or if they're just numbing the area. I opted to go to an oral surgeon for my extractions instead of my dentist since I wanted to be completely OUT for that procedure lol. I knew I would get major anxiety if I was awake during the removal of my teeth and it would freak me out way too much. If you go to an oral surgeon you have the option of going under anesthesia but if you go to a dentist you don't, so it really depends upon your tolerance for being able to deal with being awake while someone is poking and prodding in your mouth trying to remove your teeth (sorry, not trying to freak you out or anything). If you do decide to go under, you definitely need someone there to drive you home as the anesthesia will make you extremely drowsy and it takes awhile for it to get out of your system.

Re: Extractions
Follow up: had upper premolars out Thursday afternoon. I am curious about how long my gums are going to ACHE! It's not acute pain, but it's enough that I've been reaching for the Tylenol and advil at pretty regular intervals. It hurts! Wonder if I'm getting an infection or something? Suggestions? Been doing all the stuff the dentist said (warm salt water, etc.).

Re: Extractions
My gums are still aching me now and again. Mostly when I wake up in the mornings I get this horrible pain but it fades away after a while on its own strangely enough. I'm not sure why but as long as it leaves me I'm happy.Blackbeltfundraiser wrote:Follow up: had upper premolars out Thursday afternoon. I am curious about how long my gums are going to ACHE! Re: Extractions
Aha! Went to dentist today. Dry socket is the culprit! He said 2% of adults who get out their premolars get them. Don't I feel special! (ha) he packed it up with some medicated gauze and -- more pain pills!!
