Hello, Introducing myself... Newbie Here. :)

#1 Post by Bron »

Hiya, I have been reading threads on this site for a while now helping me make a decision to bite the bullet and finally go ahead with braces at 31!

My story is, I was supposed to have braces when I was around 14 but like many, at the time my parents couldn't afford to do it and therefore it never happened. When I was 23 my wisdom teeth decided to grace me with their sideways presence and push all my teeth even closer together. I had both wisdoms on the left pulled in the chair at the dentist but the other side were both impacted and growing on awkward angles. After I plucked up the courage 6 months later I gave in to having them out aswell! Which meant being sedated and held in hospital for a day to have them out. Unfortunately they didnt play nice and my last molar on the bottom right had to go with them.

I then saw an ortho for the first time and got had the Xrays as first step towards getting braces, I was still in the consulting stage when I became pregnant and very very ill. Unfortunately even after having my baby i didnt get any better and it has taken 5 years to get a diagnosis (that's a whole other story). Needless to say my teeth went on the back burner.

I was on the first day of our first proper family holiday just getting on the plane when half of the only tooth I had ever had a filling in, simply fell off! when I had it repaired the dentist said if it happens again it will have to come out!

In March this year it happened again! So it was pulled out! (top right second bicuspid). Again I was off to the ortho to finally get this sorted. my teeth are bad enough without a gaping whole!

So after lots of ups and downs, and yes and nos, and I'm gonna do it, no I'm not. I finally gave in. My teeth where sentenced to 24 months confinement!

But first extractions..... July 7th I had the two teeth on the right removed, 13th of July I had my lower right lateral incisor removed. (Took me a long time to agree to that one).

July 19th i had them put on and really apart from an ulcer that I had before they even went on I thankfully have had no issues!!!

9 Extractions and full ceramics top and bottom! :)

Thanks for reading.

Welcome Bron! Nice to see another Aussie in the mix ;)

Sounds like you have had a bit of a rough trot! But on the upside you finally took the plunge and got braced! :)

I am booked in on the 9th Aug (ceramic uppers and metal bottoms) and I too will have them on for 2 years. Tbh am starting to get really nervous about it all... But still excited. Here's hoping I totally skip the ulcers - don't like my chances though! lol! :) Lucky for me I don't need any extractions - if I didn't have my wisdoms out, it would be a different story!

Looking forward to sharing your journey to a fantastic smile! :D

Thank you! This site really is fantastic.
I was extremely nervous about getting them on, I felt so ill on the day, I had to ask the ortho to let me go to the loo half way through having them done!

I am on day ten and I have already noticed a difference, admittedly its only small but its there!! Apart from that one silly ulcer which thankfully didnt touch any of the brackets, I have really had pain.

My major issue.. My top teeth touch my bottom brackets so I had to have molar build ups which means I only have one tooth one each side that touches! Definately makes eating a challenge. I refer to it as chewing like a cow!!! LOL I'm sure it will get better with time.

I was just reading your story, you were thinking all the things I was, honestly it wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, so relax and enjoy it! :)

We will have to compare photos seeing as our dates as so close! :)

Wow! Only 10 days and already a noticable change - however small! That's awesome! :D

Did they do the molar build ups when you had the braces put on? I'm not sure if I'll need these... Suppose I'll find out in 11 days! :) Did your ortho say anything about bands? I remember a girl in my Yr 8 class (many moons ago) had them and she was in absolute agony... Hopefully I don't have to go down that road either... But who knows - It definitely is a new frontier for me!

Hey, Yep had metal molar bands done at the same time. i had spacers in for only 5 days before so they were a tight fit.
The molar build ups where done on top of the banded teeth at the same time but he has made no mention of elastics so i have my fingers crossed that I wont need those!

Yep definately a new challenge. but it'll all be worth it.

My ortho didn't mention anything about spacers, so I may not have to have them?? I am sure she would have mentioned it if I needed them... well one would think anyway! :?

Did it hurt getting the molar build ups? Hope I'm not being too much of a pain asking questions!

Pinkorchid: Ask away, I wish I had of joined before so could have asked too. :D

As for the build ups, nope no pain at all. But I dont think mine are traditional.... he made them out of glue stuck to my tooth and just kept adding more til he was happy. This way they will wear down as I go. The annoying part about build ups are that it means they are the only teeth that touch. Makes eating a challenge :-+ but I'm getting there have worked out a new technique! lol

You may not need spacers, my ortho didnt mention them either but I had an appointment on the Friday before for what I thought was for them to make sure the extraction holes had cleared up enough, and he whacked em in while I was there! Fingers crossed for you, for me they didnt hurt just annoying, felt like I constantly had food stuck in my teeth! :yuck:
When do you get yours? What state are you in? I'm SA

QueenElizabeth: Thank you, 31 is a good number isn't it better late than never!

Crazy4Snow: Thank you I'll share them when I work out how! :?:

This site is great! I am so glad I found it before getting my braces on. Everyone is so welcoming and nice and full of helpful advice.

Ewww I hate the feeling of having food stuck in my teeth :yuck: (I am a religious flosser) , so I hope I don't need the spacers... But we can't always get what we want right :P

I'm in SA too! I'm in the Mid North. Where abouts are you? Talk about a small world! :)

I'm booked in on the 9th Aug (10 days) omg... I will have them put on in town (yay shopping!) and my ortho visits my local dentist so I can have adjustments done there, which will be nice, especially with a bub. He can go to his nanna's while I get re-wired! :)

Definately a small world! I am on th Eyre Peninsula, had to travel to Adelaide to get them on, but my ortho comes here ever six weeks so that will make it easier! :D

I know what you mean about bub, my son is 5 and I dont want to freak him out and scare him off dentists!!

10 Days will go really quickly! You'll be embraced before you know it!

I grew up on the Eyre Peninsula! :D

Has your son started school yet? I am still waiting for my 8mo to get teeth... they keep threatening to come through, but haven't as of yet. Poor little guy :( I will be instilling a strict dental hygiene routine when he gets older! LOL! Plenty of time yet! Hopefully he has nice teeth - unlike his mum

I hope it goes fast! I want them on already  - I may change my mind ONCE they are actually on though! :yikes: Ask me in 11 days haha

Sorry for delay has been a big weekend!
My son is actually turning 6 in a few weeks so yeah he's in reception now and loving it. I most definatelty agree about the hygiene. Even though that's not why we news braces but hey he doesn't know that yet! Haha

I am sure that after a couple of days you will love them and will end up being obsessed with trying take pics. To try and see even the tiniest of changes! :P

Bugger I typed out a reply, then deleted it :-+

How lovely was the weather on the weekend? Didn't feel like winter that's for sure! Only 7 (and a bit) days till Brace Day and it's all I have been thinking about. I was even having second thoughts on Friday night, but snapped back to reality quick smart!

I will be taking daily pics so I can compare the differences as they happen, but I am still not 100% sure if I will post them yet
