I called today to set up an appointment for consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon to do sliding genioplasty. I was told he doesn't do this procedure for cosmetic reasons only, but in addition to other orthognatic surgery when people have braces.

Do most maxillofacial surgeons have this policy? Geez, looks like I'm back to the drawing board, but this time I'm not sure where to even look. The office told me to consult a PS, but frankly I don't want someone working on my face who only works on faces part of the time, and the rest of the body most of the time.--angela

This boggles me. The only answer I can think of is that he may be a single degree oral surgeon (meaning that he only has a DDS versus a DDS equivalent and an MD). If you are in the state of California, you cannot practice cosmetic surgery as a single degree oral surgeon unless you have a facial cosmetic license (which is not hard to get).

Still hard to understand because this is really in the scope of the oral surgeon with or without a facial cosmetic license. Or maybe he doesn't do enough of these procedures so he rather not bother with it, which in that case is better to go to someone else.

A good PS will have absolutely no problem performing a sliding genioplasty.
