is my lower hawley bow too high?---x-post

#1 Post by girl_with_a_bob »

Hi everyone,

I have been out of braces for about 3 years now. I have worn essix type retainers since debanding, but also have a back up set of Hawleys that I've not worn much. My essix retainers are now getting to the point where they're pretty beat up and are ready to be retired. I pulled out my hawleys last night and the top one fits great, but I'm not sure the bottom one is fitting properly. The bow on the lower one seems to sit really high, and appears to just barely come to the top of my lower teeth. The bow on the upper lies across the middle of my teeth, and I was assuming that the bow on the lower should be positioned similarly. I've included a photo, please tell me if this looks like the correct position for the bow on a lower hawley. If not, can this be adjusted by my dentist? I no longer live in the area near my ortho, and also have no shifting issues. Thanks.

It looks far too high for me. Without seeing it, I can't tell if it can be adjusted or needs to be remade. From the picture, though, it looks like, --maybe-- that only an adjustment is necessary--I'm not only looking at the bow but also where it crosses the teeth. Talk to your dentist and find out where they refer their ortho patients and maybe they can help.

Thanks, I'll ask my dentist about this when i go in next week. I thouht it didn't look/feel quite right, but wasn't really sure since i'm used to the essix type.
