Double brackets: is this real??

#1 Post by Rubi »

I found the thread with the youtube links very informative, so after I watched those, I searched for other similar ones. I ended up getting to a video diary of a man with braces, and he actually has two rows of brackets (like each of his front teeth has 2 brackets, one above the other, and 2 archwires). It certainly looked real enough, but I have never ever heard of that or seen that anywhere before, and I can't help feeling that this is some sort of a joke. He also had a LOT of stuff going on: top and bottom braces (including the above-mentioned double brackets), multiple elastics, top AND bottom expanders, headgear (24/7), AND something similar to a forsus appliance. This seems like so much stuff for one person to have, but the double brackets are what's really making me scratch my head.

(BTW, if this man is for real and a board user, and sees this...I am sorry I doubted you and hope I didn't make you feel bad by pointing out just how much stuff you have going on.)

Hey Rubi--ROFL!!!! I have seen those videos!! It's a guy whose tag is "True Blue Australian"....ya, right, how could anyone do all that!!!??? It's like every single bad appliance nightmare you can imagine all on one person!

He is some kind of media guy, but it's hard to tell if it's for real--for his sake, I sure hope not!!!

YES! True Blue Australian, that is him.
That's funny that you knew just who it was. I also hope for his sake, it's not real...but then, it's kind of bizarre to fake all that for no reason, isn't it? Anyway, my curiosity is really piqued right now...really want to know if there is any such thing as that double brackets technique. Hard to believe...

I think he's absolutely full of crap! For one thing, he said he had JUST gotten them installed. No orthodontist in his/her right mind would do all that on the first day. Also, his "headgear" wasn't even attached to anything in his mouth. It just wrapped around his head. The double row of brackets is just ridiculous. You can buy all that stuff online and stick them on yourself.

I think he's doing it as a fetish-thing; either because HE likes it, or yes doing it because other fetishists like it. Or.. He's just an idiot. :D

I remember a few years ago here there was somebody posting wanting to fabricate his own orthodontic appliances with the eventual goal of making his face vaguely look like that of a dog. Seriously. I believe the posters here were able to dissuade him from this plan, given the catastrophic consequences to his dental health.

There are all kinds of people in this world... whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I'm not going to judge, but I don't even understand what that means. How is it possible for orthodontics to make someone look like a dog?? Plastic surgery maybe...there is that woman who has had a ton of surgeries to look like a cat, right? But I don't even see how moving your teeth can make your face ressemble a dog. I also don't see how, even if that were possible, someone without orthodontic training could achieve that on himself. I also don't see what is possibly erotic about two rows of braces, but...

Yeah, IIRC, this was going to be accompanied by other modifications, like tattoos and who knows what else I believe his goal was to extend his jaw (or at least his bite) outwards to be kinda sorta snout-like. His idea was to fabricate a series of wire appliances that would push his teeth outwards; and yes, this would completely destroy his root angles. I think he was hoping his jaw would somehow magically extend itself in the process without orthognathic surgery.

Yes, a very loony idea with catastrophic dental consequences.

Makes double brackets look normal...

LOL :-* :-* :-* :-*

Discussions like that make me be thankful for my relatively innocuous OCD. It could have been so much worse...
Had full mouth metal braces for 21 months. Debonded April 2013. Now wearing clear plastic retainers every other night.

I have no formal dental or orthodontic education. Hence, all opinions expressed by me on this forum are those of an "informed consumer" and by no means intended as an expert advice.

I officially declare shenanigans. This guy's teeth aren't nearly misaligned enough to warrant such extensive treatment, especially two rows of brackets on one row of teeth. Combine that with the rainbow kiddie ligatures, excessive multicolored rubber bands, appliances, and forsus springs, and this just looks like a guy who is a braces enthusiast/fetishist and installs the stuff on himself. I see right through this guy. But I don't hold anything against him, other than trying to pass this off as real dental work. If he's obsessed with orthodontics or even an ortho-fetishist (whatever that actually is), then more power to him and I hope he enjoys it and gets something out of it. I've said before that I'm very much entertained by my braces and find them to be a constant source of interest. I mean, I'm not making weird videos for attention, but braces can definitely be fun and intriguing.

I'm a hobbyist skeptic, and there's no way that this guy is legit. I called him out on YouTube. We'll see if he responds. I want his ortho's phone number.

oh well, i told my Ortho about this guy, because i have 2 brackets on my canine, one on the front of it, like most people, and one on the back of it...towards my tongue...you can check my story..i weare an elastic to make the canine tip outwards..
anyway she said that sometimes they have to improvise so its not completly insane to have 2 rows of brackets on some teeth..
