First Oral Sugury

#1 Post by moonwatcher333 »

Tommorow's my first oral surgury, I'm scared to death. They're having to put me completely under, and cut open the top of my mouth because the perminate teeth aren't in the right spot, and then they'll move them. It's probably really common, but I've never had a dentist cut open my mouth before, and I've heard it'll hurt a lot once the meds wear off, any suggestions to help with the pain I'll have this weekend?

Hi,
Its so normal to be scared! I was so anxious for months before my surgery. Dont be nervous about pain though, the pain meds they have are amazing and if you are in any pain in the days after there is some great pain relief out there!

recovering from jaw surgery is surprisingly less painful than you would think. the diet and the swelling is a huge pain in the ass, but the pain is definitely tolerable, especially with the pain meds :). Good luck!!! let us know how it goes!

I'm just wondering what specific pain medications you are referring to? I have had multiple surgeries (haven't had my oral surgery yet -- will probably another 6-8 months), and each time have had horrible reactions to both anesthesia (sp?) and pain medications. I have been violently ill after being put under for wisdom teeth, deviated septum, and tonsil/adenois (three separate surgeries when I was 16, 10, and 21 respectively). I threw up so much and was so ill that I opted to have two surgeries (a second nose surgery, and wrist surgery) under locals and nerve block only in order to avoid the process.

For painkillers I can't take codeine derivatives, naproxin (aleve), or ibuprofin -- which cause ulcers and vomiting too. Sorry about all the vomit talk, but it's just what happens.

The whole fear of going under and inability to do painkillers (children's tylenol is my best friend as a 27 year old ) almost made me opt out of the surgery but my vanity and desire for a good bit outweighed the fears.

I was violently ill (couldnt even keep water down) with the GA, codeine and swallowing blood. There were alternatives available to codeine and amazing anti nausea drugs out there normally used for chemo' patients. I found acetaminophen was enough for any pain I had after two days. To be honest, Ive had lower back injuries and associated pain that were worse than anything from the jaw surgery...
