First Day...What was I thinking (eating)!?!

#1 Post by leadcat63 »

Just got my new baces 2 days ago, and I'm learning the lessons very quickly.

I was a little surprised at my visit to my orthodontist because I expected to get the spacers, then the braces. As it turns out he placed the brackets and archwires first, then I go back for the spacers in 2 weeks followed by 2 appliances (pallate expanders) a week later. The braces were a breeze, and I'm happy to be eased into the process. I've paid attention to the things others have experienced or suggested, and went to the office premedicated with Alieve and ready for the worst. After a quick hour and a half it was done. The only discomfort I had was with that cold air and sometimes cold water on my teeth, otherwise it was sooo easy. I watched the video of kids teaching kids how to brush, floss, and what to avoid and went out the door happy. Did anyone else feel silly watching one of those Barneyesque films?

There was no pain, but the pressure against my teeth was definitely there. It was a good reminder not to get crazy and order hamburgers or steak for lunch, although I was hungry because I didn't eat that morning and it was nearly 3pm. One of the girls called me later to see if I wanted to grab dinner with her. The braces were still not hurting, and I figured this would be my last opportunity to eat something solid before the real pain set in. Besides, my orthodontist did not bracket my last 2 sets of molars, so I thought I could just push stuff to the back to chew. We decided to meet for seafood and drinks.

Perhaps they should make a Barney tape with adults depicting all the things you think you can get away with but can't. My friend asked if Calamari would be okay for an appetizer and I said...."Sure". What the... was I thinking!!!! I guess I figured it was small and could just go to the back to be chewed or be easily swallowed (bear in mind, I can't even swallow a pill without gagging). With the first 1/2 bite I could feel the hardware in my mouth protesting. I didn't want to be the only adult (or child) to go back with broken brackets in the first day, so I threw my hands up and said, "I'm done!!" That's when my friend noticed the braces, and was smart enough to tell me that I shouldn't be eating that. After a quick exit to the ladies room, I ordered a crabcake instead. Talk about the slowest meal ever. Trying to chew still felt strange, but 2 margaritas helped cure the awkwardness. I spent 30 minutes learning to brush and floss all that stuff out, including the spinach that was caught in the front bracket, then decided that liquids would be my friend for the next several days.

Here we are 2 days later, still not pain, but a couple of teeth are not happy. I've learned to chew SOFT, small bites, and which meal is most important so I won't have to floss and scrub bits of food out of the hardware all day. My other meals are liquid since it's easy to just brush the stuff away. Still not looking forward to the spacers, but there's plenty of support here and a friend or two to get me through the trauma. We'll see how the drama unfolds.

Spinach is not nice, ever. I highly recommend some sort of WaterPik, or whatever brand you find. That is the only thing that will clean every bit of salad or leafy greens out. I've flossed, and brushed and still had stuff get cleaned out with my RediBreeze. Which is why I now use it before and after brushing, as well as after anything I eat.
I know how you feel finding out you can't eat something AFTER it's already in your mouth. Don't worry, pretty soon you'll be able to eat almost everything you used to. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip Ashesgap. I purchased a Sonic Care toothbrush and have a bunch of those christmas-tree-like thingys, and after rinsing, there were still little green dots in the sink. Waterpik is definitely on my list.

Hi Anxious girl,

Glad to hear that everything went well. I agree with Ashesgap. Spinach is definately off my list until this whole braces thing is over. A waterpik is a godsend. I take mine everywhere I go. Good Luck with your journey. :)

Do they make a portable WaterPik?? If so, does it work as well as the stationary set, and can you control how much it's spraying? I'm curious

Some people on here have the full WaterPik at home, and a portable one to take along places. Check the Dental DoDads section, I think there are quite a few topics about it there.

FYI if you are a Costco member, I just got my coupon book for February and they are offering $15 off for the Waterpik Combo pack. Perfect timing for me, I just got my braces today!

They do make a portable, cordless one. I have gotten really good at controlling the spray thing. I just use the blue tip to keep it down.

Two weeks later, and I just got my spacers (after the braces were put on). I braced (no pun intended) myself for the worse, took 3 Alieve, and went in with the mantra, "it'll only take 5 minutes, it'll only take 5 minutes..." My teeth must really be tight because the poor technician kept apologizing and saying she was sorry it was going to be sore after because I have tight teeth. She even asked if I needed a break, which I gladly accepted, but I think she may have needed it as well. A couple of times I was afraid she was going to put those pliars (or what ever tool she was using) right through the bottom of my jaw, but they must know what they're doing because she didn't miss a hitch.

I have to say, although they were sore going in, afterward I didn't feel anything but pressure. In fact, now it just feels as though I have a mouth full of chewing gum. It's been about 5 hours now and I've had breakfast and brushed them, but no pain yet. My jaws are tired from the frequent urge to chew the bands that are sticking up, but nothing else is bothering me right now. I'll take another round of Alieve in a few hours to stay ahead of it. I'm hoping the worst is over and I will be able to resist the need to chew on them, but not counting on it.
