Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of closing my premolar gaps. I've been closing them since october. I've got one problem, my gum is so swollen and painful as the gaps are being closed. Is this normal? I don't know what to do. i have tried rinsing with salt and water everyday. I have attached a pic to show this swelling.
My ortho used pontics in my premolar extraction gaps, so he shaves them at every appointment. As you can see the top gap has only like 1/4 of the pontic left. Is the swollen gum going to prevent my gaps from closing?? I wear elastics everyday and he has powerchains on as well. I don't know what to do?? Pls help someone. Hope my pic doesn't scare you lol

I have the same issue. Had a bridge removed to move my back teeth in place and there is a swelling of my gums between the back two molars now. Curious to see what others say..

Re: Help (Swollen gum from premolar gap closure)
Ok, i am going through pre molar gap closure as part of my treatment as well.
I havent had any filler material in the gap like you do infact i dont even know what that pontic stuff is.
From time to time my gum in the area gets sore and a little swollen, but it does settle but i do notice it coincides with the movement so it will be sore for like a week and then nothing and then a few days later sore again.
If you have shown it to your ortho and they dont seem to be concerned then you must just trust their opinion and im trusting that you respect their opinion i dont know.
I guess you have to investigate your own checklist like most of us to see if it might be something more for example, are your gums bleeding, is there more then one tooth affected, are they sensitive to hot and cold is there any pain in other teeth when biting or chewing.
I guess it could mean that there is increased blood supply and healthy active nerves where the teeth are moving. I am not a dental expert nor a dentist just throwing some ideas your way.
Perhaps ring the office and have a chat with the staff, maybe even do some research on the net to see what you can find to read. Best of luck
