New Bands, New Pain??? Is this real?
Just had lower back molars banded on Friday (1/20) and now have a wire all the way around lower teeth. I felt significant discomfort the next day and the biting and chewing part is still uncomfortable, but improving. Then beginning yesterday, and increasing today to the point of real PAIN I have like a sore throat where it really hurts to talk and swallow!!! It kind of feels like the roughness of the cement and bands on these back teeth have severely irritated my tongue way in the back and caused painful swelling. Could this be? I am a third grade teacher and do A LOT of talking and by the end of the school day today I could almost not speak and swallowing is killing me, and just moving my tongue in my mouth hurts. I know I am around germy kids all day, so maybe this is the beginning of strep throat or a virus, but it sure feels related to the bands....feedback anyone?

Cement shouldn't cause a reaction that bad. I could see your tongue maybe getting a little raw, but not your throat.

I had something similar happen to me, with the exception of the throat pain. The tongue pain that I experienced post molar bands was so intense that I could barely talk or eat. My ortho ended up removing 3 out of 4 of my molar bands after a week or so. He thinks we may be able to put them back on once my teeth aren't so tight and have moved into a position where they aren't squished up against my tongue. Since I am only 4 months in, we aren't there yet and I am still missing the bands.
I really feel for you...I have a high pain tolerance and I just couldn't take it. I hope things improve for you!!

thank you kitsune, there is some improvement today, but I am also taking Advil on a regular basis. I do think this is directly related to the bands and hopefully I am going to adjust to them like all of the other fun braces "adjustments" I have gone through so far. It feels like the bands and cement have irritated the tissue and caused it to be inflamed and painful. I just really want to be able to swallow, chew and talk like a normal person. LOL Thank you for your input!

I got my molars bands on Tuesday and too have sores on my cheeks, sides of tongue and sore throat. I think either the cement or the very bad tasting prep stuff irritated and caused sores in my mouth. Now Friday they are a little better but still much worse than the upper metal braces that were put on 2 weeks ago. When I was done the insides of my lips were sore for hours and it felt as if they had the top layer of skin pulled off, that is better now.

I know I am not imagining this, having come to the conclusion that the amount of talking I do during the school day is directly related to the amount of pain I experience. It feels like the area under my tongue at the base is inflamed from rubbing on the bands. By the end of the day talking, swallowing and eating is a challenge. Hopefully, I will get used to them. It has been one week today since they were put on. I am grateful that it is the weekend and I don't plan on talking too much...rest up for Monday. How sad my husband will be

That sounds like what happened to me. It was soo painful. I would try to dry the bands off and stick a bunch of wax to them as best as I could, especially when I went to bed. It wouldn't usually stay for long, but just that little bit of time was enough to offer a bit of relief. It will get better! I don't remember exactly how long (maybe 1-2 weeks?), but hopefully soon!Rusty'sMom wrote:t feels like the area under my tongue at the base is inflamed from rubbing on the bands.

Re: New Bands, New Pain??? Is this real?
To Rustys Mom: I'm going through the exact same thing my throat hurts so bad. I was tested for strep got a CT scan x ray and everything. Everything was negative. It turns out the bands were digging into my gums and squeezing the nerves causing something bad to happen in my throat. I'm not a doctor but the minute I took my needle nose plyers and pulled the one band off I felt instant relief. 3 days later my throat is still soar but no where near what it was before. I don't know if the damage is permenant or not but. I am 100% sure it was the band.
