Can TADs(in mild-moderate cases) resolve lip incompetence?

#1 Post by tdawg7669 »

In open bite cases where there is a minimal gummy smile and around 2-4 mm open bite with the same amount of lip incompetence, would TAD's or absolute intrusion resolve the incompetence of the lips?

You would think so because the mechanics are essentially the same. A posterior interference is being removed, allowing the mandible to auto rotate up.

That being said it is hard to find actual case studies where this has happened with TADs or other intrusion mechanics.

I hope my response isn't interpreted as a troll....

You are best off asking someone who has spent a large portion of their life studying oral anatomy and even maybe gone through the procedure of installing TADs. Your question is highly specific and it sounds as though you have some skepticism about what another doctor may have recommended for you. Second opinions from a trained professional are well worth the time/money.

Rather than undergoing surgery, my orthodontist felt fairly confident that my gummy smile/lip incompetence/overbite could be fixed with TADs. My orthodontist took a progressive approach when it came to me... he put two TADs in the back of my mouth for about eight months, then followed by adding two more to the front for about a year. The process took about two years in total (my teeth were already straight), but I was very happy with the end results. My gummy smile was drastically improved as well as my lip incompetence.

Hey, did you have to have braces? You said your teeth are already straight(so are mine) so I am wondering if it is possible to do this without braces.
