Braces and a mouth full of crowns
I've not yet gone for my consultation with the Orthodontist yet (scheduled for next Wednesday) but me, being who I am, has to do as much research as possible ahead of time
: )
Long story - short version:
Dentist believes top teeth breaking because of my over bite, broke a canine last week (3rd tooth to break since 1994), tooth appears to be healthy on visual and x-ray 'cept for the fact it only comes to the gum line now.
Suggested seeing an Orthodontist about correcting my bite and pulling down that canine for restoration.
Now to my question...
I have a mouth full of crowns already. I think every tooth on the top is crowned, an implant (1) or a bridge (1) and on the bottom all the molars are crowned.
What is the experience with braces and crowns?
Thanks,
Barb

Re: Braces and a mouth full of crowns
I have a crown on one of my bottom molars and it's fine. Ortho obviously knew about it from my xrays and said nothing about it.
Re: Braces and a mouth full of crowns
I have 2 crowns and no problems. The brackets adhere just like they do to the "regular" teeth.
Don't be nervous...the only scary part is paying for the braces!
Good luck!

Re: Braces and a mouth full of crowns
I have a porcelain crown on my top right incisor and my orthodontist told me to be extremely careful b/c it is easier for brackets to come off porcelain crowns. She didn't want to do any sanding of the crown b/c she doesn't want me to have to replace the crown until it is absolutely necessary b/c that is an additional expense on top of the $4500 I'm paying for my braces. I've had my top braces since August 2011 and I haven't had any problems with the bracket popping off. I also have a "regular" crown on one of my molars and she said that is fine. That crown has a band though.

Thanks all
DorkieDiva - what you said is what has me so nervous. I will no way be able to have all my crowns replaced!!!
Though I wonder what they do about the bridge - hmmmmm
Guess I'll find out in less than a week!!
One thing is that I couldn't care less about what type of braces they put on me.
Pretty or hard to see or full metal mouth like my friends had back in the dark ages doesn't matter.
What matters is that it be as successful as possible!!

Re: Braces and a mouth full of crowns
I have 5 crowns and had a bridge Have also had braces for 2 years. Not had any issues. Had the bridge changed...the center part removed and the other two ends kept. Now there is no space...the teeth have come together nicely. The Ortho sees the xrays and know about the crowns. so I don't see there being an issue. If you want braces I say go for it!!! ps. I am now 57 and looking forward to the end of my treatment.

I have seven crowns, all on back teeth. My ortho didn´t put brackets on any crowns yet. I think he might for working on my bite but they always have a way of figuring it out! Good luck!!

Barb - I'm so sorry I didn't want to make you nervous. I'm sure your ortho is prepared and knows exactly how to handle your crowns. I know that we are all spending LOTS of money on our teeth so my advice is to do everything to preserve your crowns. . Don't be nervous it is going to be great!
Re: Braces and a mouth full of crowns
i have one crown (had had it for about 7 years) and my ortho chose not to put a bracket on the crown just in case i have to get it removed and replaced during the course of my ortho treatment. also he said it was at a great position where it woudn't affect what work he needs to do on the rest of my teeth.
